History of BMW X3

BMW first launched the X3 in 2003, as a compact luxury crossover SUV. It''s based on the 3 Series platform, with the first gen designed in conjunction with Magna Steyr, an automobile manufacturer in Graz, Austria who manufactured the X3s to contract. Now in its second generation, BMW call the X3 a Sports Activity Vehicle, a standard description for the X-line of vehicles from the German manufacturer. The X3 was another bold move into the sporty large SUV market for the German carmaker, with many reviewers praising its spacious interior, efficient engines and good overall appearance. It was named What Car? Car of the Year Best Large SUV in 2015.

First generation BMW X3 (2003 - 2010)

The foundation of the X3 was the xActivity concept vehicle, shown at the Detroit Auto Show in 2003. This concept was also based on the 3 Series platform. The BMW X3 was then unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2003, with suspension shared with the E46 330xi and an automatic four-wheel drive system, which BMW called xDrive. This used a multiple-plate clutch which was electronically controlled to enable adjustable and variable distribution of torque from front to back, with the option of sending 100% of engine torque to either axle. The German carmaker wanted the X3 to be the best of both worlds, offering the agility of a compact model with a driving experience similar to the X5. The X3 was upgraded in 2005 before a facelift in 2007, which saw updates to the bumpers, engine line up, interior trim and suspension. Initially the car saw some criticism from reviewers, with many saying the ride was harsh and the lack of off-road capability was a mark against the relatively high sale price.

Second generation BMW X3 (2010 - present)

The second gen X3 was unveiled in 2010, using the F25 platform. Production of some of these models moved from Austria to the BMW factory in Greer, South Carolina, which was responsible for some of BMW''s other SUV models including the X5 and X6. After launch the second gen X3 was almost as large as the original X5 E53.

The market for the X3 has become even more competitive, with competition from the Range Rover Evoque, Audi Q5 and Porsche Macan. The diesel engines offered include an extensive range, although BMW does not offer the X3 with any petrol power options. Efficiency is key to BMW, so stop/start technology comes as standard as part of the EfficientDynamics pack.

There are three trim levels on the Mk2, comprising of the xLine, SE and M Sport models. The second gen car was praised for its brilliant handling, with Auto Express saying it boasts the kind of agility and poise that puts some saloons to shame. All models come equipped with BMW''s Drive Performance Control, which changes the throttle response and steering weight to suit the driver''s mood and road conditions.

A mid life facelift was given to the X3 in 2015, including the headlight updates and changes to the rear bumper. BMW has a strong reputation for producing reliable vehicles, with the pre-facelift X3 coming 12th in Auto Express'' Driver Power 2014 satisfaction survey. Euro NCAP safety testing found the X3 to be impressive when it comes to safety, awarding it a five-star rating.
