History of BMW X6

BMW launched its new mid-size luxury crossover in 2008, known as the BMW X6. The German automaker marketed the new X6 as a Sports Activity Coupe, designed to combine the best qualities of an SUV with the stance and styling of a luxury coupe. It was based on aspects of the previous generation BMW X5 and the 6 Series, and has sold well throughout its two generations. Despite its deceptive roofline the X6 has been praised for its relatively spacious interior and excellent acceleration, paired with BMW''s trademark great build quality. The launch of the X6 was a great success for BMW, with many motoring reviewers praising its strong performance and high quality cabin. Lots of luxury equipment came as standard, with a good range of engines available that combine strong performance with impressive fuel economy.

First generation BMW X6 (2008 - 2012)

BMW first unveiled the concept model for the X6 at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show, before the production model was shown at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit during 2008. It was designed to be slightly longer and wider than the X5 yet with a much lower standing, seating only four people initially. BMW says that with the launch of the X6 it invented the Sports Activity Vehicle category. The X6 was built at the North American plant in Greer, South Carolina, sharing a platform with the X5, which is also built there. BMW also announced its first hybrid version, called the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid, soon after.

It was the first vehicle to use BMW''s Dynamic Performance Control System, which worked to complement the xDrive all-wheel drive as standard. It was also the first BMW vehicle in its class to be available with adaptive LED headlights. The X6 came as a four-seat model, although a three-seat rear bench was available as an added extra.

Second generation BMW X6 (2014 - present)

The second gen model was launched at the Paris Motor Show in 2014, based on the successes of the previous model. It boasts a striking shape paired with a luxury interior, and makes the most of the great handling the Mk1 had become so well known for. Its design changes brought the X6 in line with the smaller X4 and larger X5, using better aerodynamics and other updates to help improve efficiency and cut fuel consumption by up to 22%.

The head and legroom allows for three adults in the back with the Mk2 model, using a rear bench as standard rather than as an optional extra. Boot space has also been increased when compared to its predecessor. The trademark BMW kidney grilles have been flattened and widened to accentuate the overall width, with narrower headlight clusters to contribute to the overall dynamic look of the front end. BMW also added its clever Air Curtain technology, which consists of vents behind the front wheel arches designed to let air out of the wheel wells, reducing drag and improving overall efficiency. BMW has always been proud of the drive quality on the X6, with Auto Express calling its drive ''physics-defying'' thanks to the way its sizeable 2,185kg frame takes corners with little body roll and tons of grip.

The diesel engines are the big seller for the X6, particularly the 3.0 L 30d offering 245 bhp, which is predicted to account for 80% of all UK sales. Two petrol engines are also available to complement the two diesel offerings. BMW included a high level of equipment as standard, with leather features, sat-nav, heated seats and cruise control as standard.

BMW is well known for creating reliable vehicles, and the X6 should be no different. Many components are shared with the X5, which has had no major mechanical issues since it launched, so X6 owners should be in good hands.
