History of Citroen C4

The Citroen C4 is a small family car produced by French automaker Citroën. First launched in 2004, it is currently in its second generation. The C4 was initially designed to be the successor to the Citroen Xsara, which Auto Car called ''terminally dull''. Mechanically, it''s similar to the Peugeot 308. A facelifted version was launched for the 2008/2009 model year, with a new front end, reverse lights, and dashboard revisions. Citroen announced in 2010 that the coupé version was not to be updated as it would be replaced with the Citroen DS4. The C4 won second place in the 2005 European Car of the Year awards. Now in its second generation, the Citroen C4 was a great success for the French car manufacturer, winning a number of awards including World Car Design of the Year in 2006. Quality and reliability is good on the C4, with an above average score according to Warranty Direct''s reliability index.

First generation Citroen C4 (2004 - 2010)

Citroen entered what is still a very competitive market for small family cars in 2004 when they unveiled the new Citroen C4. It was designed by a team including Donato Coco and Jean Pierre Ploué, who were recognised for helping to bringing strength and style back to the Citroen marque. The Mk1 C4 was built on a similar floor to its cousin the Peugeot 307.

It was available in two variants, a five-door hatchback and three-door coupé. One of the C4''s major selling-points was its great use of technology, including the "lane departure warning system" in the top-of-the-range models, as well as directional headlights, translucent dashboards, transparent glass roof, electronic stability program (ESP) and a fixed steering wheel hub.

In 2008 the C4 hatchback and coupé received a facelift. This included slight cosmetic changes to the front, which now featured what some called a "mouth" as well as a larger, more trapezoid shape.

Second generation Citroen C4 (2010 - present)

The second gen C4 was first shown at the 2010 Paris Salon, before launching later that year. This newer version saw a slight increase in size and was only available with five doors due to low sales of the previous three-door model.

Compared to the original model the new design of the French vehicle was felt to be less eccentric. 2012 saw Citroen unveil a saloon version called "C4 L", which was designed by the new PSA Style Centre in Shanghai. 2014 saw the launch of the C4 Cactus, produced at PSA''s factory in Madrid, Spain. Although called the C4 Cactus, the vehicle is in fact based on the same platform as the C3 and the DS3. The C4 Cactus won What Car? Best Small SUV Less Than £16,000 2015.

The Mk2 C4 features specific tyres with low rolling resistance and a slightly modified suspension to help improve passenger comfort. The engine range includes three petrol and four diesel engines, from a 1.4 VTi and a 1.6 THP turbo to a 2.0 HDi 16v.

The C4 won the 2006 World Car Design of the Year, as well as the Autosport Rally Car of the Year from 2008 to 2010. The second generation C4 was proud to receive a Euro NCAP Advanced Award for its eTouch Emergency & Assistance System.
