History of Citroen C5

The Citroen C5 is a large family car that has been in production since 2001. Produced in Citroen''s factories in China and France, the C5 is now in its second generation. Its known to offer a sturdy build quality, which you''d expect of a Citroen, and a great range of engines. It was designed to replace the Citroen Xantia, and was among the first of the Citroen vehicles to use the ''Cx'' nomenclature. The Citroen C5 is praised for its attractive exterior design. What Car? describes it as ''quirky'' and ''more refined than most rivals''. It''s known to offer an excellent range of diesel engines with good standard equipment levels. However, What Car? says the steering and handling isn''t as rewarding as many of its rivals and call the dashboard layout confusing. Car Buyer praised the vehicle, saying that ''few family saloons, if any, are quite as comfortable as the C5''.

First Generation Citroen C5 (2001 - 2007)

The first generation C5 was made available in 2001 as a five door hatchback and five door estate. This Mk2 Citroen C5 was the last Citroen car developed under the chairmanship of Jacques Calvet. Buyers had the choice of numerous petrol and diesel engines, ranging from 1.8 litres to 3.0 litres, with the option of four-, five- and six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. The C5''s brakes and steering were not powered by the same hydraulic system as the suspension, which was unusual for a Citroen car at this time.

In 2004, Citroen gave the C5 a major facelift. This saw the introduction of new front and rear ends to bring it into line with the look of the new Citroen C4. The hatchback model was lengthened from 4,618 mm to 4,745mm, while the estate was lengthened from 4,755 mm to 7,840mm. This new facelifted model was also given swivelling directional headlights.

Citroen introduced Hydractive suspension on this model, which improves ride quality, keeps the car levelled and enables to car to drive on three wheels if one tire is flat. The suspension is derived from the Hydropneumatic suspension used in the 1960s Citroen DS.

Second generation Citroen C5 (2008 - present)

The Mk2 Citroen C5 was unveiled in October 2008. This new version of the C5 does not retain the hatchback body style, instead becoming a regular, three box saloon with an aerodynamic shape. It was officially launched in February 2008, with the estate version released in May 2008. This generation C5 was awarded 2009 Semperit Irish Car of the Year. It was also awarded 2008 - 2009 Japan''s Import Car of the Year.

The second generation C5 was made available with conventional springs as well as the hydropneumatic suspension, with a 2.7 litres Ford AJD-V6.

In 2011, the C5 was given a mild facelift. This featured a number of cosmetic changes, such as LED lights. Three engines were added to the range at this time, including two diesels, a 2.0 HDI 160 and a 2.2 HDI 200, as well as a petrol, a 1.6 VTI 120. It was given another facelift in 2012, with cosmetic changes including softer chevron badging, modified c5 badging, softer chevron grille and exclusive badges.
