About Servo Units
If the brake pedal is hard to push up and down this could be a sign of a faulty Citroen servo unit. This unit is part of the brake master cylinder, which connects to the brake pedal using pushrods and is typically positioned on the nearside of the engine compartment.
The Citroen servo unit is used in a hydraulic braking system to reduce the pressure required by the driver when applying the brakes. It works by using the power of a vacuum created by the suction of the intake manifold in the internal combustion engine. This reduces the amount of driver effort required when braking. The remaining power is then transferred to the master cylinder.
If a Citroen servo unit or the brake master cylinder is damaged, this could lead to complete failure of a vehicle’s hydraulic braking system. This may be evidenced by a hydraulic fluid leak, or the brake pedal being flat to the floor. If just the Citroen servo unit fails, the driver will notice an increased difficulty in depressing the brakes. As with all brake issues, it is very important that they are addressed quickly to prevent any further damage to the vehicle.
Citroen trivia
- Citroën was the first company to offer credit for buying cars! André Citroën registered a consumer credit company for the sole purpose of providing car buyers with the credit they'd need to buy one of his cars!
- Citroën cars have been put through their paces and all in the name of advertising. Citroën vehicles have trekked huge distances for promotional reasons, including expeditions across the Sahara, throughout Africa, all over Asia, and even across Alaska.
- John Lennon appeared in an advert for the Citroën DS3, many years after his death. The advert caused quite a lot of public criticism for Yoko Ono, who agreed to the musician's likeness being used.
- Buying Maserati was definitely a mistake for Citroën. The SM model didn't sell well, and that led to financial difficulties that meant the car company was eventually acquired by Peugeot.
- In 1968, Citroën bought control of the Italian car firm Maserati. That purchase led to the design of the Citroën GT, which came with hydro-pneumatic suspension and a V6 engine. It did well in terms of sales, but production of the last version, the DS23 Pallas Electronique, was stopped in 1975 after the '73 oil crisis.
