History of Citroen Xantia

Citroen first launched the Xantia in 1993, as a large family car to sit within its extensive line up. The name Xantia was based around the word ''xanthos'', which means ''light'' in the Greek language. Designed by Bertone, an Italian automobile company who have styled cars for Ferrari, Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz, the Xantia was a largely successful model for the French manufacturer, selling over 1.2 million models during its nine year production run. It was facelifted towards the end of its life, before production ceased in 2001. The Xantia was a largely successful model for the French manufacturer, with Auto Express saying it marked a serious assault on the fleet market when it was introduced in 1993 due to its spacious and comfortable cabin and upmarket take on the previous model. The famous Citroen hydropneumatic suspension helps give an excellent ride quality, although reliability can be an issue across the model range.

Citroen Xantia (1993 - 1998)

Citroen first released the Xantia in 1993, designed to be an upgrade on the existing Citroen BX model, which had been hugely popular. The Xantia built on this success but in a more mainstream market, designed to compete with the Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Cavalier and Toyota Carina E. As with other PSA Group vehicles, two years later Peugeot launched the 406, which used the same floorplan, main structure and engines as the Xantia vehicle.

Initially the Xantia was available as a hatchback, although an estate model was added a couple of years after the initial launch. Engines used within the Xantia were largely familiar, based around the PSA XU-series petrol engines in formats ranging from 1.6 to 2.0 litres, as well as a 2.0 L 16-valve version for the Xantia VSX. A powerful turbocharged 2.0 L engine was available from 1995 onwards, as well as a 1.8 L 16 valve and a 2.0 L 16 valve. A 3.0 V6 was also added from 1997, designed to sit as a top-of-the-range model. Citroen stuck with their traditional hydropneumatic suspension system for the Xantia, which had already been seen on older DS models.

In 1998 the Xantia models were facelifted. This meant the introduction of three-piece bumpers with a new HDI diesel engine.

According to What Car? the Xantia never had the best reputation when it came to reliability, explaining that suspension trouble was the biggest cause of claims made by owners to Warranty Direct. Fortunately, they also say that Citroens are some of the cheapest vehicles to repair, something that Breakeryard.com can definitely help with. The Xantia was largely successful in the UK with strong sales throughout its lifespan, although many felt that it never truly matched the success of some of its competitors, including firm British favourites like the Vauxhall Vectra and Ford Mondeo.
