History of Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta is a supermini manufactured by the Ford Motor Company, which has gone from strength to strength since it was first launched in 1976. Now with multiple generations having been produced, the Fiesta is recognised as one of the best-selling Ford vehicles ever made. Records show that over 740,000 were sold in 2012 alone, with more than 16 million vehicles sold since production started. In 2014 Ford announced that the Ford Fiesta was the UK''s best-selling car of all time, with 4,115,000 sold since its debut. The Fiesta also has a star-studded history on the track, particularly in the world rallying arena. Professional stunt and rally driver Ken Block drove a Fiesta in a number of his hugely popular Gymkhana videos. As a leader in the small car market, the Fiesta is credited as a being a supermini with a ''big car'' feel, providing solid and determined traction on the road with unbeatable handling capabilities. Still the best-selling car on the road in the UK, the Ford Fiesta is now in its sixth generation with a distinctive, sleek look that has helped boost its impressive popularity.

First and second generation Ford Fiesta (1976-1983 and 1983-1989)

The Fiesta Mk I was launched in 1976 and was a breakthrough for Ford as its first truly successful front-wheel drive car. The Fiesta became an overnight success, and the millionth Fiesta was produced within just three years. The car was available with 957 cc, 1.1 and 1.3 L OHV petrol engines and in base, Popular, L, Ghia and S trim, as well as a van variant. Towards the end of the first gen''s lifespan minor revisions appeared across the range, with larger bumpers fitted to meet new crash regulations as well as other small improvements to generate showroom appeal ahead of the upcoming introduction of the second generation model.

The second generation Fiesta appeared towards the end of summer 1983, and was essentially a facelifted version of the Fiesta Mk I. It featured a revised front end and interior, as well as a different dashboard on the lower-series trim options compared to the more expensive variants. A lean-burn 1.4 L replaced the 1.3 L engine, while the 1.1 L (1117 cc) was said to be able to achieve a maximum speed of 95 mph on a flat surface. The Ford Fiesta was a top-selling car in the UK throughout the 1980s, as well as achieving popularity in Europe with both male and female drivers.

Third and fourth generation Ford Fiesta (1989-1997 and 1995-1999)

Launched early in 1989, the third generation Fiesta was a comprehensive redesign of the old car with an all-new body and aesthetic. The car was based on a new platform that got rid of the old cars live beam rear axle for a semi-independent torsion beam arrangement to complement the radically different look. This generation also addressed the most significant weakness of the previous generations - the lack of a 5-door model. This model overlapped with the release of the new fourth gen Fiesta, which led to the Mk III being named the ''Fiesta Classic'' until production ended in 1997.

The all new fourth generation Fiesta Mark IV was launched in 1995 and quickly became Britain''s best-selling car from 1996 to 1998. Many components were heavily changed, including a new suspension system which gave the Fiesta one of the best handling abilities in its class. The new gen models also featured a range of new Zetec-SE engines, available in 1.25 L and 1.4 L forms. As well as the major changes to the exterior and chassis the Mark IV also benefited from new interior styling.

In 1999 the Fiesta underwent a minor facelift to fit with Ford''s New Edge look, including new bumpers and wheel designs with a Focus-inspired face. This facelift version was the last generation of Fiesta to come out of the famous Dagenham plant following the closure of the factory in 2002. The Fiesta was still the best-selling supermini in Britain in 2001.

Fifth and sixth generation Ford Fiesta (2002-2008 and 2008-present)

The shiny new fifth-generation Fiesta was unveiled on 1st April 2002. Most engines were carried over from the previous Fiesta generation, but renamed "Duratec". Initially Finesse, LX, Zetec and Ghia trim levels were available, with limited edition variations coming later. The fifth generation was the first Fiesta to feature Anti-lock Braking Systems and passenger airbags as standard. Known as Mark VI in the UK and elsewhere, due to the fourth generation facelift model often being referred to as the Mark V, this generation has become the best-selling Ford Fiesta to date.

The newest Fiesta, the sixth generation, was shown in concept form as the Ford Verve in September 2007 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. This model is based on the new B-car platform adopted by Ford. Production of the new Fiesta started at Ford''s Cologne plant in August 2008: a second plant in Valencia, Spain, also began production of the vehicle in early 2009. Depending on the country of production, there are four body styles available including three and five-door hatchbacks, a four-door saloon and a three-door van. In February 2009 Britain''s What Car? magazine named the new Fiesta "Car of the Year".
