History of Ford Fusion

The Ford Fusion was in production from 2002 to 2012 before being replaced by the B-Max. It''s a vertically stretched version of the Ford Fiesta five-door hatchback, which was classed as a mini-MPV. The Fusion was an ideal car for drivers looking for a supermini that could comfortably transport four adults. There was only one generation of Ford Fusion produced, although the model was facelifted in 2006. The Ford Fusion was a mini-MPV manufactured by the American auto maker for ten years. It was built in Ford''s Cologne factory and was a five-door hatchback based on the fifth generation Fiesta. The Fusion offered a little more space than the Fiesta and great visibility. However, critics bemoaned the lack of flexibility, with just a split fold rear seat and limited oddment storage, especially considering the Ford Fusion was much more expensive than the Fiesta from new. Ford replaced the Fusion with the B-Max in 2012.

Ford Fusion engines

Engines available on the Ford Fusion were the 78 bhp 1.4-litre or 99 bhp 1.6-litre petrol engines, which are able to reach around 40 mpg, and the 67 bhp 1.4-litre or 89 bhp 1.6-litre diesel engines, which can return over 60 mpg. In terms of transmission, both automatic and manual gearboxes were available.

Specification

At launch in 2002 the trim levels available were 1, 2 and 3. The 1 was very basic with a cassette player, anti-lock brakes, dual front airbags and central locking. Upgrading to the 2 got you air conditioning, electric front windows, remote central locking and a CD player. The 3 added alloy wheels, an alarm and front fog lights. In May 2002, the Plus model with larger alloys and privacy glass was added to the lineup as the top of the range.

2006 Onwards Ford Fusion facelift model

In 2006 the Fusion was facelifted with cosmetic changes including alterations to bumpers, side mouldings and door mirrors, a redesigned dashboard and a new bright colour palette. The trim levels were renamed Style, Style Climate, Zetec, Zetec Climate and Plus and were slightly revised. Remote central locking and CD player became standard across the range. New technology was also made available, including power-folding mirrors, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, Bluetooth with voice control and more.

Servicing and reliability

The Ford Fusion has very low servicing costs and decidedly average reliability according to What Car?, whose Reliability Surveys have shown the Fusions experience an average amount of faults that take an average amount of time to fix, and dealers charge an average amount for the repairs. Common problems can be faulty pipework on some turbodiesels and problems with the airbag warning light. The Ford Fusion is a safe vehicle, scoring a four star rating in its Euro NCAP crash tests.
