History of Ford Mondeo

The Ford Mondeo is a mid to large sized family car manufactured by motoring powerhouse the Ford Motor Company since 1992. The Mondeo name comes from the Latin word mundus, meaning "world". The Mondeo has been popular throughout its four generations and has won many awards, including winning both What Car? Best Estate Car and What Car? Best Family Car five times, as well as Drive Car of the Year: Best Medium Car and Top Gear Car of the Year. The Ford Mondeo is an incredibly popular vehicle for Ford, spanning four generations since its introduction in 1992. The Mondeo has won a huge number of awards during its lifetime, from Top 10: Most Reliable Cars Made in Britain in 1997 to What Car? Best Family Car in 2013.

First generation Ford Mondeo (MkI 1991 - 1996 and MkII 1996 - 2000)

The Ford Mondeo launched in 1992, with sales beginning in 1993. It is a mid-size car produced by the Ford Motor Company, replacing the Ford Sierra in Europe. Available as a four-door saloon, a five-door hatchback, and a five-door estate, all models for the European market were produced at Ford''s plant in Genk, Belgium.

The Mondeo featured all new manual and automatic transmissions with a sophisticated suspension design, giving it class-leading handling and ride qualities. Safety was a high priority, with the Mondeo the first ever car sold from the beginning with a driver''s airbag in all of its versions, as well as side-impact bars, seat belt pretensioners, and ABS (higher models) as standard features. The interiors were well made, with velour trims, an armrest with CD and tape storage, central locking, power windows, power mirrors, illuminated entry and flat-folding rear seats among other added extras.

The Mondeo facelift launched in October 1996 and saw the introduction of the MkII. It addressed some of the original Mondeo''s biggest criticisms, including its unimaginative styling, poor headlight performance and the cramped rear legroom.

Specification levels were lowered around that time, including air-conditioning and alloy wheels becoming optional on the UK Ghia models, which may have indicated a desire to cut costs by Ford and regroup some of the considerable amount invested in the original design. The saloon version featured distinctive rear lights which incorporated an additional reflector panel that extended around the top and side of the rear wings. The interior was also mildly changed and safety specification was improved, with the Mk II gaining a ''flagged'' three star rating in EuroNCAP testing.

Second and third generation Ford Mondeo (2000 - 2007 and 2007 - 2014)

The second gen Ford Mondeo launched in 2000, and was considerably bigger than its predecessor. A longer wheelbase improved legroom in the rear and a new Duratorq diesel engine helped create a competitive diesel version. Chassis and suspension was carried over to maintain the car''s reputation for great handling. Simplified trim levels in the UK featured the LX, Zetec, Zetec S, Ghia, Ghia X and ST. Although Ford prioritised safety once again with the second gen, Euro NCAP gave the new Mondeo a lower-end four star rating, lower than many of its rivals. However, the second gen Mondeo ranked well when it came to popularity in the UK, regularly featuring in the official list of top selling cars in the country.

Ford released the third generation Mondeo in the UK in 2007 with five trim levels: Edge, Zetec, Ghia, Titanium and Titanium X. The Mondeo MkIII petrol engines included a 1.6-litre with two power outputs (110 PS & 125 PS), a 2.0-litre , a 2.3-litre for 6-speed automatic models only, and a 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo with 220 P.S. The new Mondeo used a new electro-hydraulic steering system, first seen on the C-Max, that works to sharpen steering response and helps to save fuel. The third gen Mondeo featured in Casino Royale in an incidental scene where it was driven by James Bond, helping to introduce the model.

This version was named as one of two to win Car of the Year 2007 by Top Gear. Despite good reviews from the motoring media right up until production ended, this generation of Mondeo has not been a good seller in the UK, falling out of the top ten selling cars in 2010 when just over 30,000 were sold.

Fourth generation Ford Mondeo (2014 - present)

After some initial delays due to the closure of the Genk assembly plant, Ford launched the fourth gen Mondeo in October 2014, with it now assembled at their plant in Valencia. The new Mondeo is powered by a range of four-cylinder engines offering 160-240 PS (118-176 kW) for the petrol powered cars and 115-180 PS (82-132 kW) for diesel vehicles. Initial press reaction has been positive, although many feel that increasing pressure from premium German automakers and high quality competition in its field would not make the new Mondeo an easy-sell for Ford.
