History of Ford Transit

The Ford Transit Connect is a compact panel van that has been in production since 2002. There have been two generations so far, offering buyers a choice of various specifications. It''s a reliable vehicle that is also available as a minivan. The Connect is popular throughout Europe, winning International Van of the Year in 2003 and again in 2014. The Connect is a tough, practical and reliable van. Known for its great loadspace and exceptional fuel economy, the Ford Connect is popular amongst van drivers throughout Europe. It received a five star rating at the Euro NCAP safety tests in 2013.

First Generation Ford Transit Connect (2003 To 2013)

The Transit Connect Mk1 was introduced to the European market as the replacement for car-derived vans based on the Escort and Fiesta. Based on the front-wheel-drive C170 platform, shared with the Ford Focus, the Connect was available as a three and four door minivan, with four- or five-speed transmissions. The Mk1 was awarded Van of the Year by Professional Van and Light Truck Magazine in 2004.

Second Generation Ford Transit Connect (2013 To Present)

The second generation Ford Transit Connect was first introduced in September 2012. The Mk2 features a slight redesign, offering new features such as an optional rear liftgate in addition to the double rear doors. The Transit Connect also includes an optional feature called MyKey, a personalised key system that allows the owner to program different keys to restrict different vehicle features, such as top speed and maximum radio volume.

Engines

The first generation Transit Connect was initially made available with two engines; a 1.8 litre Duratorq TDCi diesel and a 2.0 litre, four cylinder Duratec gasoline. However, the Mk2 offered a more powerful engine, a 2.5 litre Duratec 25, as well as a 1.6 litre EcoBoost engine. Ford also offers optional hardware which allows for the 2.5 litre engine to be converted to use CNG or LPG/propane instead of gasoline.

Notable issues

The Ford Transit Connect is a generally reliable, efficient van. However, there are a few minor common problems that owners run into. This includes problems with the wipers, which can occur due to a faulty parking position on the wiper motor. In this situation, you''d need to install a new wiper motor to resolve the problem. There are also known issues with the side airbags on any Transit Connect vehicles built between February 2004 and November 2005. They weren''t wired up properly, so you may need to get in touch with Ford to fix them.
