History of Honda Accord

The Honda Accord has been in production since 1976, offering various body types and features from coupes and estates to hatchbacks and crossovers. So far there have been a total of nine generations. It has won a number of awards, such as Drive''s Car of the Year in 2008 and Green Car of the Year in 2014. It also won Car of the Year Japan in 1985, 1993 and 2002. Having won awards across the globe it''s evident that the Accord is popular worldwide. Best known for its four door saloon model, the Honda Accord is a popular car in areas across the world. Warranty Direct ranked it 17th in its top 100 most reliable cars. It also ranked second out of 26 family cars. According to Kelley Blue Book, the Honda Accord is the Best Buy of the Year among midsize cars in 2015.

The early Honda Accord (1976 to 1985)

The very first generation of the Honda Accord was launched in May 1976, offering buyers a brand new three door hatchback with 68 horsepower. Honda later released a four door saloon version of the Accord in 1977, boosting the horsepower up to 73.

The car was an instant hit, selling well thanks to its size and excellent fuel economy. There were only variants of 1.6 and 1.8 litre diesel and petrol engines released with the first generation. The Mk1 Honda Accord was in production until 1981. The second generation was introduced a year later, giving buyers a wide selection of engines. Still only 1.7 and 18 litres, but with more variations. Production for the Mk2 ceased in 1985.

Honda Accords in the late 1980s and 1990s

The Mk3 was officially introduced in Japan in June 1985, and later that year in Europe and North America. One notable change made to the exterior of the Mk3 was the hidden headlamps. This was the first Honda to employ double wishbones at both the front and rear ends. Production of the Mk3 stopped in 1989. The fourth generation was released in 1990, but was only in production for three years. It was much larger than the previous generation, featuring the same low slung design and wraparound rear window as its predecessor.

Available as a coupe, saloon and estate with engine sizes ranging between 1.8 and 2.2 litres, in both petrol and diesel forms. The Mk5 was introduced in 1994. Honda developed two distinct versions of the Accord for this new launch. One version for the European market and another for the American and Japanese market. Production for the Mk5 stopped in 1997.

Sixth, seventh and eighth generation Honda Accord (1998 to 2012)

The Mk6 was split into three separate models, designed for the Japanese, North American and European markets. Engine sizes ranged between 1.8 and 2.2 litres. Production stopped in 2005, which was the same year Honda released the Mk7. Two separate models of the Mk7 were made, although each was designed specifically for their market - one for the Japanese and the other for Europe. Both were sold in areas across the globe.

Honda made use of the K20 engine for the Euro R trim model, which produced a powerful 220 horsepower. In comparison to the first generation Accord''s 68 horsepower engine, this was quite a big difference. Production for the Mk7 continued until 2007.

The Mk8 went on sale in 2008, giving buyers another powerful engine in the form of a 2.4 litre VTEC petrol engine. Not much changed with this generation, but as with every new Accord it proved popular with the public. Production for the Mk8 ceased in 2012.

Ninth generation Honda Accord (2013 to present)

The concept for the Mk9 was revealed at the North American International Auto Show in 2012. A number of powerful engines were made available with the ninth generation Accord, including a huge 3.5 litre J35Y V6 powertrain. The Accord features plenty of technology and a lot of safety kit, which comes as standard.
