First generation Honda Civic Type R (1997 - 2000)

1997 saw the launch of the first Civic to be given the Type R name, based on the sixth generation Civic vehicle. Transforming the existing Civic into the Type R version was done by converting the existing model into a high performance car capable of driving on the circuit.

Many elements were shared with the Integra Type R, including sound deadening and weight reduction tactics. A seam-welded monocoque chassis was used for the first time to improved chassis rigidity. The B16B engine used boasted one of the highest power output per litre ratios for a naturally-aspirated engine. The car had red seats, red door cards and red floor mats to enhance the sporting aesthetic. The Type Rx variant featured auto air conditioning, a CD player, keyless entry unlock systems and power windows for a luxury take.

Second generation Honda Civic Type R (2001 - 2005)

2001 saw the introduction of the Civic Type R EP3, which was a unique three-door hatchback vehicle sold for the UK market. This second gen model was manufactured in Swindon, and featured a 2.0 litre i-VTEC engine as well as the close ratio 6-speed transmissions and uprated brakes seen on its predecessor. Luxury features such as the red Recaro race seats were left off however.

A Japanese domestic market (JDM) version was also manufactured in Swindon before being shipped to Japan for sale. Japanese-sold versions were available in traditional Type R championship white, which was not an option for the European market.

This Mk2 Civic Type R was lauded by the motoring press, winning Hot Hatch of the Year awards more than once from What Car?, Top Gear and Fifth Gear. It was also extremely popular for mainstream drivers, becoming a huge seller for Honda. An update in 2004 saw this CTR receive revised EPS with quicker steering, improved suspension settings and new projector headlamps.

Third generation Honda Civic Type R (2007 - 2010)

Once again with the third gen CTR, two forms were offered, one for the European market and one for the Japanese domestic market. The European offering was again available as a three-door hatchback, with a new chassis and updated internal design. A new torsion beam axle suspension was also adopted, although the drive train remained similar to previous models.

Top Gear Magazine praised the European Civic Type R's controls and awarded it Hot Hatch of 2007. 2010 saw production of the third gen Civic Type R cease for the European market, due to issues with the large 2.0 litre VTEC engine not meeting new Euro V emissions regulations. Rather than adapting the engine to comply, Honda axed the CTR at this point.

Fourth generation Honda Civic Type R (2015 - present)

After a lengthy wait 2015 saw the arrival of the brand new Civic Type R hot hatch. Billed as a 'race car for the road', Honda aims to set new standards for high performance hot hatches with its new launch.

According to the Honda website the Civic Type R's performance is unmatched in the front-wheel drive hot hatch segment, managing 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in just 5.7 seconds with a class-leading 167 mph top speed. Innovative new suspension systems have been introduced to improve handling and maximise on-road performance, complemented by Dual Pinion Electric Power Steering to improve steering response.

Suede-effect sports seats with high backs with smart red accents are a step back to the CTR's roots, something which loyal fans are sure to appreciate.
