History about Hyundai Getz

The Hyundai Getz was a supermini produced by South Korean car maker Hyundai from 2002 to 2011. This small car was marketed throughout the world, aside from the USA, Canada and China, achieving popularity across the globe. The Getz won a number of awards in many different countries, including Australia''s Best Small Car and Denmark''s Best Seller of 2003 award. The Hyundai Getz was available in both three- and five-door hatchback body styles. Its successors include the Hyundai i120.

The Hyundai Getz was a popular introduction to the supermini class for Hyundai, winning a number of awards, including What Car? magazine''s Budget Car of the Year award in 2003 and Scottish Small Car of the Year in the same year. What Car? praise the Getz for its frugal costs paired with plenty of space, although some felt that the trim and handling gave the car a decidedly low budget feel.

Hyundai Getz (2002 - 2011)

The Hyundai Getz was first seen in 2001 at the Tokyo Motor Show, where it was unveiled as a concept car. It was then premiered to the world in 2002 at the Geneva Motor Show. The Getz was intended to be a successor to the Hyundai Pony model. It was designed at Hyundai''s European engineering centre in Frankfurt, Germany, available in both three- and five-door hatchback body styles.

Trim levels in the United Kingdom were GSI, CDX and Sport. When the Getz launched there were three petrol engines available: a 1.1 L, a 1.3 L and a 1.6 L. A diesel option in the form of a 1.5 L three-cylinder unit was also offered, all of which were licensed from VM Motori. These engine options varied, however, depending on the market in which the car was being sold. Four-speed automatic transmission options were offered with the Getz, paired with an overdrive and torque converter. These were for the 1.3 L and 1.6 L petrol engines, although after the facelift this was also available for the new 1.4 L option. A five-speed manual unit was also offered as an option for all engines. Honest John praised the 1.1 L engine on the Getz for its good economy, which it claims does 49mpg.

2005 saw Hyundai facelift the Getz vehicle, unveiling the updated version at the Frankfurt Motor Show the same year. It featured updated styling to both the front and rear of the exterior, with the addition of rounded headlights and a new redesigned grille. Engine-wise a new 1.5 L diesel option was added for European markets, as well as a 1.4 L petrol offering. The interior of the Getz also received an update, with an upgraded dash and changes to the interior fascia and trim. For the UK market side airbags and air conditioning were fitted to all models as standard.

Euro NCAP tested the Hyundai Getz in 2004, scoring it a respectable four out of five stars. They described the Getz as a "reasonably balanced performance" providing generally good in-car protection for children. However, they did mention that the design of the car did not help with protecting pedestrians.
