History of Hyundai i30

The Hyundai i30 is a small family car, now in its second generation. Designed and manufactured by South Korean carmaker Hyundai, the i30 shares a platform with the Kia cee''d, and was first released in 2007. Available as a three- or five-door hatchback or a five-door estate, the i30 has been a popular model for Hyundai, winning a number of awards including being named the Most Satisfying Car in Britain during an Auto Express survey in 2010.

According to many reviewers the i30 signalled a turning point for the South Korean carmaker, with the model becoming a strong fixture in the family hatchback class since its inception back in 2007. Auto Express praise the i30 for its great value for money and eye catching styling, with What Car? calling the standard level of spec generous.

First generation Hyundai I30 (2007 - 2012)

The first generation Hyundai i30 was launched in 2007, after being designed at Hyundai''s Design and Technical centre in Germany. It was first introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 2007, before being released for the European market later that same year.

Also in 2007 Hyundai released the i30cw, known as the i30 estate. This was first seen at the Seoul Motor Show in 2007 before being marketed worldwide. It provides a larger version of the i30 with a roomier, spacious interior - boasting a cargo volume of 65 cubic feet, or 1,800 L.

The i30 was available with a number of different engines, including a 1.6 L Gamma and a 2.0 L l4 CRDi. Buyers had the option of a five-speed or six-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission, with the automatic option available with the 1.6 L and 2.0 L petrol and 1.6 CRDi models.

The 2008 model i30 scored a perfect five star score during Euro NCAP safety testing, an improvement on the four star score given to the 2007 model the previous year.

The Hyundai i30 won a number of awards around the world, including being named Car of the Year by Cars Guide and Car of the Year in Spain in 2008. The 1.6 L CRDi also won Green Car of the Year.

Second generation Hyundai I30 (2012 - present)

The second generation Hyundai i30 was unveiled at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in 2011, as a five door hatchback. It was once again designed in Germany, at Hyundai''s Motor Europe Technical Centre. Production of the i30 in Europe was managed at the company''s facility in the Czech Republic. This was the second model produced under the Premium Youth Lab brand by Hyundai.

A choice of four engines were offered with the i30, including six power options. Upgraded power offerings, including a 1.6 L diesel unit, also helped to reduce the overall CO2 emissions.

In 2012 an estate variant of the i30 was unveiled, at the Geneva Motor Show. In 2013 a three-door model was also introduced in a bid to attract more young buyers to consider purchasing the i30. One of the main design changes was a larger, more aggressive look to the grille, particularly when compared to the traditional five-door model.
