About Actuators

The Jaguar actuator is a motor which is part of an automatic transmission system and its job is to push the clutch release arm, removing drive from the engine to the gearbox. In a manual vehicle this role would usually be performed by the driver pressing their foot down on the clutch pedal.

The Jaguar actuator is self-adjusting which means that when the clutch cover and pressure plate wear down the Jaguar actuator is capable of compensating for their wear. This adjusting mechanism is sensitive and, once an actuator is removed it will be destroyed, so if the Jaguar actuator shows signs of failure it is not possible to repair it and it should be removed. When the Jaguar actuator is replaced it is essential to also replace the clutch cover, plate and bearing alongside it to ensure correct operation.

Symptoms of a Jaguar actuator being faulty can include frequent stalling, an inability to engage drive from start-up and depending on the make and model of the vehicle, or a warning light appearing on the dashboard alerting you to a fault. On inspection of the Jaguar actuator you may find that it appears hot, which can indicate a jammed part.

Jaguar trivia

  • The 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the most gruelling and famous race events in the world, has been won by Jaguar an astonishing seven times. Their first victory was back in 1951.
  • Jaguar isn't a big name in F1, but they did have a go. They raced between 2000 and 2004 but didn't perform well enough to justify the costs. They managed a less than stellar ninth place in their final race.
  • The most expensive car in Jaguar's history is the XJ220. It cost a rather intimidating £413,000 in 1991 and is also one of the fastest cars they've ever built, capable of getting up to 217mph.
  • The first-ever XK120 rolled off the production line and was delivered immediately to Clark Gable, who had preordered it well in advance. The XK120 came with a removable windscreen and could hit a solid 120mph..
  • The iconic Jaguar ornament on the bonnet isn't included as standard anymore. Lots of people seem to think it's illegal, but they're not, as long as the ornament is spring-loaded. The jaguar ornament is known in-house as The Leaper, and you can still buy the Leaper as an after-purchase accessory.
