History of Jaguar S-Type

The Jaguar S-Type is an executive four-door saloon that was produced by the British car manufacturer between 1999 and 2008. This model took its name from the original 1963 Jaguar S-Type. Jaguar has a rich history of making luxurious cars in the UK. The S-Type was first unveiled at the Birmingham Motor Show in 1998. It was built at Jag''s Castle Bromwich facility in Birmingham and was designed by Geoff Lawson in 1995. The S-Type is well known for being an executive car that was popular with many. During its nine year production the Jaguar underwent a few minor facelifts that updated the styling. There were some reliability concerns with pre-2004 models including a long list of recalls. Some issues included seat belt buckle concerns, front suspension ball-joint failure and the risk that the automatic gearbox may engage reverse gear when in forward drive.

Jaguar S-Type X2000

The four-door saloon S-Type was launched in 1999, having been first shown at the 1998 Birmingham Motor Show. Its styling was a nod to the original S-Type of the 1960s. Inside the car, there was a U-shaped centre console and comfortable leather seating with ample space for four adults. The traditional leaping jaguar bonnet ornament was an optional extra on this first gen S-Type; later models had the Jaguar logo incorporated into the radiator grille.

In terms of engines, the S-Type was available with a V8 or V6 petrol or a diesel. The 4.0-litre Jaguar AJ-V8 engine was increased to 4.2l in 2002. The V6 engines used a Ford Duratec unit, and the diesel was a Ford/Peugeot 2.7l HDi Ford AJD-V6/PSA DT17 that was used across a number of Ford, Peugeot, Citroen, Jaguar and Landrover models.

For the model years 1999 - 2002, the Jaguar S-Type was available with either a five-speed manual or five-speed J-Gate Ford 5R55N transmission.

Jaguar S-Type R

The supercharged Jaguar STR was designed to compete with the BMW M5 and Mercedes E55 AMG. Under the bonnet was a newly revised 4.2-litre V8 with an Eaton M112 supercharger. It delivered 400 hp and 0-60 mph in just 5.3 seconds. The R was more aggressively styled than the standard S-Type with 18-inch alloy wheels, rear apron, side-skirts, front apron and rear spoiler.

2003 Model Onwards

Some changes were made to the 2003 model. An electronic parking brake was added as was the six-speed automatic ZF 6HP26 transmission and a flip-open key for the ignition. Styling-wise, the 2003 model had a revised dash, centre console and grille with the Jaguar badge incorporated.

2004 Model Facelift

For the 2004 model year, there were some more styling changes including redesigned front and rear aprons, slightly modified grill, remodeled rear light clusters and the addition of an aluminum bonnet. The facelift model also brought with it a new 2.7-litre V6 diesel engine with 207 hp, and the windscreen washer jets were built into the windscreen wiper arms. Inside the cabin, the S-Type remained the same.

The Jaguar S-Type Was Discontinued In Spring 2008 To Be Replaced By The XF.
