About Heater Resistors

A Jeep heater resistor is used to control the speed of the blower fan motor. In some vehicles the resistor is also used to control the air conditioning in a vehicle. Some SUVs or vans have a separate Jeep heater resistor in the front of the vehicle and one in the rear as they have two heater systems in the vehicle.

If a Jeep heater resistor fails, you may find that the heater fan will no longer blow on one or all of the in-vehicle settings. If the blower motor is causing problems, you could notice that using the vehicle’s heating or air conditioning system is noisy, which could be caused by a failing Jeep heater resistor. On inspection of a failed Jeep heater resistor, you will most likely find points on the resistor that are burnt. This could be caused by an unnatural amount of load on the heater resistor fan. This could be caused by insulation from around the fan being dragged in to the fan, causing it to struggle to turn freely. Jeep resistor failure can also be caused by the bearings of the fan becoming damaged, resulting in excessive draw.

Jeep trivia

  • Although they were designed for the military, it didn't take long before Jeep released a version for civilians. The CJ-2A had several features that were lacking on the military versions, such as a tailgate, a side-mounted spare tire, and an external fuel cap.
  • The original Jeep was designed in only two days! The prototype took 75 days to be built and then delivered to the US army that had commissioned the vehicle.
  • Jeep has had eight different owners to date. The current owners of the iconic brand are Fiat-Chrysler, but the name has been owned by recognisable names like Renault and AMC.
  • Jeeps have been seen a lot on the small screen, with perhaps the most recognisable being their use in the award-winning TV show Breaking Bad. Both Hank Schrader and Skyler White drove a Jeep, although it was Schrader's 2006 Jeep Commander (XK) that looked the best.
  • There were a lot of car firsts in the 1963 Jeep Wagoneer. Dubbed by Jeep as the first-ever luxury SUV, the Wagoneer came with independent front suspension (a first for a 4x4), as well as the first overhead-cam six-cylinder truck engine.
