History of Kia Rio

The Kia Rio is a subcompact car produced by Kia since 2000. This South Korean-made vehicle has been popular throughout the world in a number of different forms, including as a three- and five-door hatchback and four-door saloon, depending on the country of sale. Now in its third generation, the Kia Rio has been popular for its impressively affordable price point, paired with good usability and fuel economy. However, the supermini class is a tough market, and the Rio faces stiff competition. The Kia Rio has been quite the success for the South Korean manufacturer, with What Car? saying that it feels "impressively grown up for a supermini thanks to its spacious, stylish interior". Carbuyer say that the Rio has tough competition from models like the VW Polo, the Peugeot 208 and the Hyundai i20, although they say that it''s no pushover - packing a punch with its competitive price point, stylish looks and low running costs.

First Generation Kia Rio (2000 - 2005)

Kia first released the Rio in 2000, as a four-door saloon and a five-door hatchback - depending on the market in which it was sold. The saloon version was not sold in the UK, where the hatchback model alone was known as the Rio. The affordable nature of the Rio was an instant plus point for the marque, although first reviewers found its build quality and driving experience lacking.

In some countries, including most of Europe and the UK, a 1.3 L SOHC four-cylinder petrol engine was offered. Several trim levels were offered dependent on the market, with most European countries receiving trims with a relatively good level of standard equipment. Safety features included driver airbag and seatbelts as well as ABS as an option for the entry level models, coming as standard on the top of the range car - the Rio LX in the UK.

In 2002 Kia gave the Rio line a mild facelift, which included upgrading the engine and suspension as well as new styling both inside and out. In 2005 the Rio received a four star score during Euro NCAP safety testing.

Second generation Kia Rio (2005 - 2011)

The second gen Kia Rio was unveiled in 2005, and was based around a redesigned platform which it shared with the Hyundai Accent. As with its predecessor the UK market only received the five-door hatchback model again. This time however it saw some engine upgrades, to a 1.6 L DOHC four-cylinder Alpha II engine that was also used in the Hyundai. Other engines including a 1.4 L version and a turbodiesel 1.5 L engine were also available.

In 2010 the Rio range was facelifted, to allow Kia to implement its new Tiger Nose grille. For UK models these changes meant that the Rio now looked exactly the same as the model sold in the US, with a 1.4 L DOHC four-cylinder petrol engine or a 1.5 L DOHC four-cylinder 16-valve diesel. Both of which were paired with a five-speed manual gearbox.

Third Generation Kia Rio (2011 - present)

In 2011 Kia debuted the latest model of the Rio at the Geneva Motor Show. Once again this was based around the Hyundai Accent, featuring the option of either a 1.4 L or a 1.6 L Hyundai GDI Gamma engine. For the European market a 1.25 L petrol engine was also offered, as well as a 1.1L turbodiesel CRDi engine which boasted the lowest emissions and highest MPG of any non-electric car around this time. Transmission options came in the form of a five-speed manual, a six-speed manual or a four-speed automatic, depending on the engine currently being used.

In Europe this third gen model also saw the introduction of a three-door option. Although mechanically identical to its five door predecessor, the three-door Rio is designed to appeal more to a younger audience thanks to its longer doors and sportier overall appearance. It was also cheaper overall than the five-door option. Auto Express do say that the rear doors help to make the most of the roomy interior of the Rio though, making them worth the extra cost.

In 2011 the Kia Rio was once again tested for its safety, improving upon its previous result by achieving a five star safety from Euro NCAP.
