History of Kia Sedona

The Kia Sedona is an MPV that has been produced by the South Korean manufacturer since 1998. When it was first launched in September 1998, the Sedona was the cheapest, full-size people carrier on sale in the UK. The Kia Sedona is a seven-seater people carrier with sliding rear doors, similar in size to the Chrysler Voyager but with a lower price tag. Kia is currently producing the third generation of Sedona, however the car was withdrawn in the UK in 2012 because of poor sales. The Kia Sedona is known for being a relatively low cost MPV that''s made in South Korea. There have been two generations of Sedona sold in the UK.

First generation Kia Sedona (1999 - 2006)

The Kia Sedona was marketed globally for its launch at the tail end of 2008. First available as a 1999 model, the Kia MPV came with a choice of two engines: the 2.5 L Rover KV6 24v petrol with 163 PS and the 2.9 L turbodiesel engine with 126 PS. These engines were either mated with a five-speed manual or automatic transmission. The trim levels were S, SX, GSX and Executive, all of which had a two-two-three seat layout.

From 2001, the engines were updated to a 2.5 L KV6 Euro 3 petrol with 150 PS and a new 2.9 L CRDi common rail diesel with 144 PS. The trim levels were consolidated to just LX and SE models, however a further five trim levels were added until the end of the first gen''s production.

This first generation Kia Sedona may have been the cheapest MPV on the market in Britain, however running costs are less kind on the pocket with thirsty engines and costly servicing. It ranks close to the bottom of reliability rankings and the measly two-star Euro NCAP rating doesn''t inspire much confidence. Some known issues include rust in the seams and floorpans, prematurely failing wheel bearings and ABS cutting in at low speeds because of a software fault.

Second generation Kia Sedona (2006 - 2014)

Introduced in 2006, there were both short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase versions of the second gen Kia Sedona. The SWB was designed especially for the European market and was the only version available for this area. Although the Sedona falls in the large MPV class, this newer iteration is lighter than its predecessor. It has a lighter engine, more high-tensile steel and a lighter transmission and rear suspension. The seating layout changed in this newer model to two-three-two, offering more seats suitable for adults.

The second generation Kia Sedona was the second top selling large MPV in the UK market. A facelift in 2010 added a new grille and new equipment including a reversing camera built into the rear-view mirror. There was now only a single engine choice, a 2.2 L CRDi 192 PS engine. There was a choice of either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox, and three trim levels: 1, 2 and 3. In September 2012, the Sedona was withdrawn due to poor sales.
