About Steering Column Electrics

Most modern motor vehicles are built with a power assisted steering system. This is invaluable, especially in heavier, less manoeuvrable vehicles, where the effort required to steer the car would be excessive without it. For many years the majority of power assisted steering systems used hydraulic pressure to aid the operation of the steering wheel. However, electric power is now gaining considerable popularity as an alternative means of managing the power steering and the traditional mechanical steering rack is now being powered by an electric steering column.

A basic electric steering system will consist of a pinion shaft, a steering torque sensor, a rack and pinion housing, a ball screw mechanism, a steering rack, a drive belt and an electric motor to provide the power.

Many manufacturers and owners take the view that this technology has three main advantages over hydraulic systems. Firstly, it is felt that an electric steering column provides greater control. Secondly, it increases fuel efficiency. Finally, it is considered to be friendlier to the environment.

Furthermore, unlike the conventional hydraulically-assisted power steering system, electrical steering column systems have the capability of automatically reacting to motoring situations such as velocity, road conditions and even the manner of driving. There is also a reduced load on the engine and the system has greater reliability and durability.

Kia trivia

  • The first major commercial hit for Kia was The Pride. Not many people know that the design of the car was based on the Ford Festiva, with a few slight changes that made it easier for South Korea's drivers to get used to.
  • Kia doesn't quite have a production facility on every continent (they don't have one in Australia), but they are present in 190 countries and have over 5000 dealerships.
  • A deal with 20th Century Fox saw Kia build special editions of the Kia Sportage and Sorento. The tie-in was with the X-Men: Apocalypse movie, and while the Sportage resembles the shape-shifting character of Mystique, the Sorento looked incredible with it's Wolverine inspired claws.
  • Kia is currently part-owned by Hyundai, who owns just under 34% of the company. Lots of people think that the two companies are rivals!
  • The 2020 Kia Telluride SUV is the triple crown winner of the prestigious automotive awards, which includes the NACTOY Utility Vehicle of the Year, the MotorTrend SUV of the Year, and the Car & Driver 10Best. This is the first time that an SUV walked away with all three of the awards.
