About Alternator Brackets

The Land Rover alternator works in conjunction with the battery to produce power for the electrical parts of the car.   Alternators function by turning the mechanical action of the car's rotating drive shaft into electricity. They do this through the use of rapidly-spinning magnets. This magnetic field in turn produces an electrical current, which is used to power the car electrics. The alternator is also essential for re-charging the car battery, ready to provide the spark necessary to start the car next time.

The Land Rover alternator bracket, usually made of steel or aluminium, functions as a casing or mounting for the Land Rover alternator.

Usually alternators are fixed using alternator brackets that bolt to a particular part on the engine. One alternator bracket is usually fixed and doesn't move, while the other alternator bracket is able to move in order to control the drive belt.

If the alternator bracket has malfunctioned, it can do so without warning and can cause the drive belt to make a whining noise and eventually break if the problem is not addressed.  As well as potential drive belt damage, a broken alternator bracket can cause the alternator to be sitting misaligned and can affect performance of this part. Constant vibration weakens the Land Rover alternator bracket and can cause it to crack and break, but this damage can be slowed down if the alternator is bolted on tight enough to the Model> alternator bracket, which reduces excessive vibration to the alternator and alternator bracket.

Land Rover trivia

  • Land Rover was notorious for trying to find ways to avoid paying taxes and extended that to their customers too. They built the Defender 110 so that it could (just about) fit 12 people! Technically, that meant that they could class it as a bus, and owners didn't have to pay standard road tax.
  • Land Rovers and James Bond go hand in hand. The 4x4 Land Rover has been in more Bond films than there have been Bond actors! In Spectre, the Defender SVX was customised with 37-inch tyres and more power.
  • The Queen loves Land Rovers and is reported to have owned as many as 30 different models in her life. It was in a Land Rover Defender that her majesty terrified the then Crown Prince Abdullah with her wild driving skills.
  • In the 1950s, you could buy yourself a Land Rover with tank tracks instead of wheels. Known as the Cuthbertson Version, it was intended for use by farmers and was tested by driving across the Scottish Highlands.
  • According to the film, Judge Dredd (1995), Land Rover will be the last ever car manufacturer in the world. The car company had a heavy presence in the film, and you can still see some film versions of the car driving around the UK.
