About CV Gaiter Outers
A Land Rover outer CV gaiter is a strong rubber protective cover which fits snugly over the CV joint in order to protect it from debris and damage when the vehicle is in motion. It contains lubricant which enables the parts of the CV joint to move smoothly without wear.
Failure in a Land Rover outer CV gaiter will most likely be caused by damage to the rubber material which can mean that the essential lubricant is lost and contaminants can enter the confines of the gaiter which causes risk of damage to the inner CV joint. The CV joint is essential in driving the vehicle forward as it transfers torque from the transmission to the wheels at a constant speed, and if damaged can cause the vehicle to cease operation.
The most common way to diagnose a damaged Land Rover outer CV gaiter is by inspection by a mechanic who will be able to see any signs of cracking, wear or lubricant leaking from the gaiter. However, in the event of a damaged Land Rover outer CV gaiter causing damage to the CV joint you will hear a knocking noise coming from the vehicle, which becomes louder on acceleration.
Land Rover trivia
- Land Rover made the 101 Forward Vehicle for the UK military. It was originally built to haul howitzer cannons! The vehicle is so high, in fact, that a step had to be built into the front wheel so that the driver could get into the cab.
- One of the most unique vehicles ever was the floating SUV designed and built by Land Rover. Unfortunately, the Floating Ninety Defender led many drivers to believe that their own Land Rovers could also float, and many cars were driven into lakes as a result.
- Land Rover was the two-decade standout winner of the Camel Trophy, a gruelling off-road challenge that sees vehicles compete in Siberia, the Sahara, Australia, and other hostile terrains.
- Although the first Land Rover was designed in 1947 (by Maurice Wilks), the company wasn't actually founded until 1978!
- Most cars get an immediate redesign after the prototype is designed. Not with the Range Rover, however! The 1966 design was considered perfect as it was, which never happens in the automotive industry. The Range Rover is considered a work of art, and one of them is even on display in the Louvre.
