About Prop Shafts

The Land Rover propshaft is a key part of an automatic vehicle’s transmission and is attached to the gearbox using a propshaft coupling. This coupling is usually a two-piece rubber doughnut shaped gaiter with metal bushings inside to connect the propshaft. The Land Rover propshaft can be attached to the gearbox using a variety of different fixings such as nuts and bolts or cap screws. The ends of the Land Rover propshaft can either be parallel or tapered and this will influence which fixing is used.

Land Rover propshaft failures can happen for a variety of reasons, but most common is general wear to the propshaft coupling, which can be more common in rubber couplings. If the propshaft coupling becomes damaged, this can cause excess play in the Land Rover propshaft. This play can twist the pipe.

Other things that could cause damage to the Land Rover propshaft could be caused by road hazards denting the tube of the Land Rover propshaft. It’s also possible for the Land Rover propshaft to shear in half if it has been rubbing against another part of the vehicle. This could be caused by incorrect installation of the Land Rover propshaft or nearby parts.

Land Rover trivia

  • Inspired by the Jeeps that had been used in WWII, the first Land Rover's steering wheel was in the middle of the dashboard. This was partly to counter the need to create left and right-hand drive models for different countries.
  • The designer Charles S. King worked with Rolls Royce to design jet engines before going on to build the Range Rover. King would go onto building a car around those jet engines that then held the world land speed record, the first turbine-powered vehicle to do so.
  • Although the first Land Rover was designed in 1947 (by Maurice Wilks), the company wasn't actually founded until 1978!
  • Land Rover made the 101 Forward Vehicle for the UK military. It was originally built to haul howitzer cannons! The vehicle is so high, in fact, that a step had to be built into the front wheel so that the driver could get into the cab.
  • In 2012, Land Rover hired Posh Spice as their temporary creative director. Victoria Beckham was the key to the design of the Evoque Special edition. It came with a hand-finished matte paint job, mohair floor mats, and a matching four-piece luggage set.
