About Thermostat Housings

Part of the car's engine cooling system, the Land Rover thermostat has an important part to play in ensuring the engine stays at the right temperature for optimum performance, power and efficiency. The thermostat functions to prevent the movement of liquid coolant into the radiator until the engine has reached the correct temperature and allows the coolant to flow into the radiator when the engine needs cooling down. The Land Rover thermostat housing functions to house and protect the thermostat.

The thermostat lies between the engine and the radiator, in the Land Rover thermostat housing, sealed tightly with a thermostat housing gasket.

The thermostat, based on the temperature of the engine, will either open or close, acting as a valve, enabling or preventing the coolant to flow into the radiator. If the temperature of the engine is too cold, the thermostat remains shut, keeping the coolant out of the radiator. If the engine temperature is too hot, the thermostat opens, allowing the coolant to flow in. The thermostat opens to release the flow of coolant into the radiator when the engine has warmed up to the right temperature. By waiting until the engine is fully warmed up before releasing the coolant, the thermostat is enabling the engine to warm up as quickly as possible, which helps the engine to perform better and helps to reduce wear and tear on engine components, prevent deposits and reduce harmful emissions. The thermostat functions to stop the car engine from overheating, by opening to enable coolant to travel into the radiator. The thermostat housing plays a crucial role in helping to protect the thermostat and ensure that the car runs at a proper working temperature.

A sign of a failed thermostat or a fault with thermostat related components such as the thermostat housing is an engine that overheats or an engine that doesn't reach the right heat for correct engine operation. If corroded or cracked the thermostat housing should be replaced as the thermostat could get damaged. Since this component is crucial to maintaining correct engine temperature, and therefore vital for running the engine, it's important to make sure the thermostat housing is intact and functioning as a protective casing. Consulting with your mechanic to make sure the correct fault has been found is a good idea before purchasing replacement parts. When replacing this part, choosing to fit a good quality Land Rover thermostat will guarantee compatibility with the make and model of your vehicle.

Land Rover trivia

  • Land Rovers and James Bond go hand in hand. The 4x4 Land Rover has been in more Bond films than there have been Bond actors! In Spectre, the Defender SVX was customised with 37-inch tyres and more power.
  • The Range Rover designer hated what he had made. Charles Spencer "Spen" King CBE, was focused solely on designing a large V8 engine, and then just drew a box around it to show where the engine would sit. It annoyed him for the rest of his life, and he insisted that he'd only put 0.1% of development time on the car shape. He also hated that they would be used for anything other than farming, saying, "...to use them in the school run, or even in towns and cities at all, is completely stupid."
  • Land Rover made the 101 Forward Vehicle for the UK military. It was originally built to haul howitzer cannons! The vehicle is so high, in fact, that a step had to be built into the front wheel so that the driver could get into the cab.
  • Although the first Land Rover was designed in 1947 (by Maurice Wilks), the company wasn't actually founded until 1978!
  • In the 1950s, you could buy yourself a Land Rover with tank tracks instead of wheels. Known as the Cuthbertson Version, it was intended for use by farmers and was tested by driving across the Scottish Highlands.
