History of Mazda Demio

Mazda first launched the Demio in 1996, as a supermini to add to its current car collection. The Demio, now in its fourth generation, is also marketed under a number of different names, including the Mazda2, Mazda 121 and Mazda Metro. It is currently marketed globally by the Japanese manufacturer Mazda and has been a success around the world, winning a number of awards including 2008 World Car of the Year and Japanese Car of the Year. The Mazda Demio was a great fit with the other late-90s superminis of the time, with many reviewers praising its affordable price tag and decent range of kit. However, What Car? have named a number of little niggles with the car, including the poor drive quality and less than impressive steering and handling.

First generation Mazda Demio (1996 - 2002)

Mazda first released the Demio in 1996, as a tall hatchback with a minivan-esque style. This model was a redesign of the earlier Revue vehicle. When it launched Mazda was experiencing some negative press coverage, so it came as a surprise to many that the Demio was such a success.

Production of the Demio began the same year, using the DW platform. It came with a number of engine options dependent on the market, including a 1.3 L l4 petrol and a 1.5 L l4 petrol. In 1999 the model was updated to feature a revised exterior, with added cabin air filtration systems and a retuned automatic transmission.

Second generation Mazda Demio (2002 - 2007)

In 2002 Mazda unveiled the second generation Demio vehicle. For the Japanese market the Demio name was kept, although in other countries the name was changed to Mazda 2. The second gen model used the DY platform, with all models coming with ABS and EBD as well as the option of adding stability control. A variety of engines from Mazda''s Z-Family were used within the Demio, including a 1.5 L petrol and a 1.4 L diesel. The Mk2 Demio was once again very well received, particularly within its home Japanese market.

Third generation Mazda Demio (2007 - 2014)

The third generation Demio was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2007. This version was built on the DE platform, which Ford also used during production of the 2008 model Ford Fiesta. Mazda decided to use a range of lightweight materials to keep the car light as well as reducing the overall dimensions of the vehicle, keeping it solidly within the supermini class. For the Mk3 model the lead designer was Ikuo Maeda, who later went on to become the Head of Design at Mazda in 2009. For the European market the option of a three-door model was also given, with engine choices including a 1.3 L and a 1.5 L petrol as well as a 1.4 L common rail turbodiesel.

Fourth generation Mazda Demio (2014 - present)

Rumours of a new Demio first began to surface in 2013, before official photos were released in 2014. This newer model was based around the Mazda''s CX-5 platform, a step away from the Ford platform used for the previous Demio. This change gave the new vehicle a longer overall length paired with wider tracks to both the front and rear. There was however less room for passengers in the rear seats as well as less headroom overall.

Also known as the Mazda2, this model uses SkyActiv-Drive automatic SkyActiv-MT manual gearboxes paired with stop-start technology and a brake regeneration system. Initially, this model was offered with a 1.5 L petrol engine and a 1.5 L diesel engine, with the SkyActiv-D 1.5 L diesel first shown at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.
