About Steering Pump Electrics
The Mercedes-Benzelectric steering pump forms part of a hydraulic power assisted steering system and is not to be confused with electric power steering, which operates without a belt-driven hydraulic pump. An Mercedes-Benzelectric steering pump is found in what is sometimes described as electro-hydraulic or hybrid power steering systems. This type of system uses the same source of hydraulic pressure to provide the steering assistance but the hydraulic fluid is pumped out of the reservoir by an Mercedes-Benzelectric steering pump rather than a belt driven by the engine.
The speed of the pump is regulated by an electric controller which has the ability to vary pump pressure and flow. This tailors the system’s contribution to the steering efforts to different driving situations. This means that the Mercedes-Benzelectric steering pump can operate at higher speed and thereby provide greater steering assistance when the car is being driven slowly. This is especially helpful in providing assistance when the vehicle is being parked. A further advantage is that the pump can be operated at low speed or shut down completely to provide energy savings when driving in a straight line.
The Mercedes-Benzelectric steering pump therefore plays an important role in operating a hydraulic power assisted steering system and is an effective alternative to an engine driven pump.
Mercedes-Benz trivia
- Nepal had very few roads at the time, but the car company still gifted a shiny new Merc to the king of the country in 1940. It was the first car that had ever been in Nepal!
- Unlike most cars, Mercedes vehicles are not spray painted. Instead, they are completely submerged in anti-corrosion coating and primer. That means the protective liquid can get into every part of the car.
- If you thought self-driving cars were all about Tesla, then it might surprise you to know that Mercedes Benz made an autonomously driving vehicle as early as 1995. It didn't gain popularity, but it became the foundation of the modern driving technology found in every Mercedes Benz.
- Ever noticed that you've never heard a Mercedes rattle or make any kind of squealing sound? You never will either, because all of their vehicles are welded in up to 10,000 places! You're not going to find a loose nut or bolt rolling around.
- Karl Benz might have patented the design of his Motorwagen in 1886, but it was his wife who jumped behind the wheel first for a quick (as quick a 0.9hp will deliver) 120-mile tour through the countryside of Germany. Poor Karl didn't even know!
