About Steering Rack Bootss

A steering rack forms part of the commonly used rack and pinion steering system.  A rack and pinion is a type of linear actuator that consists of a coupling of gears which combine to translate rotational motion into linear motion. The pinion is a circular gear that works in conjunction with a set of teeth on the rack, which is a linear gear. When the pinion is caused to rotate by the movement of the steering wheel this forces the rack to move relative to the pinion, which has the effect of converting the rotational movement of the pinion into linear movement that results in changing the angle of the wheels.

It is important that the mechanism of the steering rack is kept clean, dry and effectively lubricated. This is achieved by encasing the end of the rack in Mercedes-Benzsteering rack boots. Also known as steering rack gaiters, Mercedes-Benzsteering rack boots are made from rubber and are flexible and waterproof. They are designed to keep out water and dirt and keep the essential lubricant in. If water or dirt is allowed to infiltrate the Mercedes-Benzsteering rack boots or lubricant is allowed to escape it will result in wear and, ultimately, the need to replace the entire rack. It is important, therefore, if there is any sign of a problem with a vehicle’s Mercedes-Benzsteering rack boots, that replacements are fitted without delay.

Mercedes-Benz trivia

  • Nepal had very few roads at the time, but the car company still gifted a shiny new Merc to the king of the country in 1940. It was the first car that had ever been in Nepal!
  • Most people think of silver when they think of a Mercedes, but that iconic colour was an accident. Just before a race in 1934, the white-painted W25 was found to be 1kg over the weight limit. The paint was quickly removed, the weight limit reached, and the car won the race.
  • Unlike most cars, Mercedes vehicles are not spray painted. Instead, they are completely submerged in anti-corrosion coating and primer. That means the protective liquid can get into every part of the car.
  • Ever noticed that you've never heard a Mercedes rattle or make any kind of squealing sound? You never will either, because all of their vehicles are welded in up to 10,000 places! You're not going to find a loose nut or bolt rolling around.
  • We all recognise that distinctive Mercedes logo, but did you know that the three points of the star represent air, land, and water? There was a point where they considered adding another point to represent space, but they decided against it in the end.
