MG ZR (2001 - 2005)

The MG ZR launched in 2001 out of Birmingham, and featured a hot hatch FF layout. The ZR 105 came with a 1.4 K series engine, which produced 102 bhp and 123 N·m torque, giving a 0-60 mph of 9.7 seconds and a top speed of 111 mph. The top of the range model was even more impressive, as the ZR 160 came with a 1.8 K Series VVC engine producing 159 bhp and 174 N·m torque, giving a 0-60 mph of 7.4 seconds and an impressive top speed of 131 mph.

2004 saw the ZR range receive a facelift, alongside the existing MG Rover collection. This new look for the ZR was created by Peter Stevens, who was responsible for design within McLaren F1. This gave the vehicles a far more modern aesthetic, including new front and rear bumpers, headlights, tailgate and other outer features. 2004 models also saw a revised interior with a new selection of seat materials and a new dash design, with updated soft-touch buttons. This brought the ZR in line with other modern vehicles of the time.

After the 2004 facelifted ZR came the introduction of the Trophy and Trophy SE models. The new ZR Trophy included a sunroof, new 16-inch ''Grid-spoke'' alloys, improved rear light clusters, a leather steering wheel and side sill and rear bumper extensions. The Trophy SE model featured 17-inch ''Straights'' alloy wheels and replaced the sunroof with air conditioning, for a luxury feel.

In 2005 the proposed takeover of MG Rover by SAIC fell through, and the company went into receivership. The company was eventually bought by Nanjing Automobile three months later. The MG range was relaunched in 2007, although both the ZR and ZS were not included in the new vehicle line up.
