About Clutch Master Cylinders

A MINI clutch master cylinder is essential in the operation of the clutch. The clutch is responsible for disconnecting the engine when you bring the vehicle to a stop. The MINI clutch master cylinder is connected to a reservoir that stores hydraulic fluid. When the driver presses the clutch pedal the pressure from this act pushes an adjoining rod which is connected to the MINI clutch master cylinder. The MINI clutch master cylinder converts this mechanical pressure into hydraulic pressure by transferring the hydraulic fluid to the slave cylinder. This pressure is then applied to an attached pressure plate and finally to the clutch release bearing which brings the clutch in to operation.

If you have an issue with the master cylinder you may first notice that you have trouble switching gears. You may also notice brake fluid by the pedals in the vehicle’s foot well, suggesting a fluid leak. A loud screech may also be noticed when holding down the clutch pedal with the brake down. You may also notice less resistance when depressing the clutch pedal or a clutch pedal that is stuck to the floor. This indicates the master cylinder needs replacing immediately.

MINI trivia

  • The Morris Minor Mini was the first British car to sell over one million units. It reached that landmark number back in 1961.
  • The Mini's designer, Sir Alec Issigonis, didn't like car windows that had to be rolled down. In fact, he didn't think that cars should have side windows at all!
  • In 1959 you could buy yourself a brand new Mini for just £497. That's about £2,342 in today's money. At the time, Minis were owned by members of The Beatles and (much to everyone's surprise) Enzo Ferrari.
  • The Mini has been voted second place in the most influential cars of all time. It was narrowly beaten by the Ford Model T.
  • Minis are still made in the same production site as the original line. The same site is still used in Oxford, although their car panels are now made in Swindon, and most of the engines made for Mini cars are manufactured by BMW in Hams Hall.
