History of MINI Countryman

British marque MINI first launched the MINI Countryman in 2010, as a subcompact crossover SUV designed to bridge the gap between the existing MINI models and a more practical SUV-type vehicle. It was the first car of this type to be released by MINI, and the first five-door model to be launched in the MINI BMW era. This crossover design meant that MINI stepped in to a different arena, rivalling the likes of the Nissan Juke and other crossover models. Although some reviewers have mixed points of view when it comes to the overall styling of the MINI Countryman, it has had a generally very positive response since its launch in 2010. Auto Express say that "the MINI Countryman is a quirky looking, fun to drive SUV, which has proved a hit with UK buyers", while What Car? praise the way it has brought the retro MINI style together with a sense of practicality well suited to small families.

MINI Countryman (2010 - present)

MINI first launched the Countryman in 2010 at the Geneva Motor Show. It was the first five-door model to be released by the marque since the BMW era of vehicles. It was also the first MINI crossover, taking cues from the MINI Crossover Concept. The model went on sale for the UK market towards the end of 2010. This model was available in five trim levels: One, Cooper, Cooper S, Cooper D and the John Cooper flagship.

Although the reaction to the styling was a little hit and miss, the MINI Countryman was designed to combine the best bits of the traditional MINI hatch with the styling and practicality of a five-door SUV. The Countryman has more room inside the cabin thanks to its longer wheelbase, also boasting a higher ground clearance than the MINI Clubman.

The Countryman shares powertrains with the Hatch and Clubman, although it does give the additional option of an all-wheel drive powertrain as well. Auto Express say that the 1.6 L engine is a great choice, boasting 90 or 112 bhp paired with reasonable running costs. The John Cooper model offers the fastest option, tuning the same engine as the Cooper S to produce 215 bhp. All models receive a six-speed manual transmission as standard, with an automatic transmission available as an option on all models except the One D. Depending on the country of sale, the All4 all-wheel drive option is also available on different models. This powertrain includes electro-hydraulic differentials, with up to 50% of the engine''s power going to the rear wheels during normal driving conditions.

The chunky looks of the Countryman gives the inside a more practical feel, with a bigger boot and plenty of interior space - enough to seat four adults. The improved suspension and four-wheel drive system means that it also performs better off road. In 2013 the Countryman was given a facelift, with the updated model unveiled in 2014 at the New York International Auto Show. By 2014 two new body colours were added as well as lighter alloys and a more efficient range of engines, with the new structure incorporating a hexagonal radiator grille.

The Countryman was popular throughout the world, becoming MINI''s second most popular model after the iconic Hardtop. According to statistics it sold 50% more units than the Clubman, Convertible and Coupe combined during its first year of production. For the US market, almost one out of three MINI vehicles sold in 2011 was a Countryman. In 2010 Euro NCAP awarded the Countryman a full five-star safety rating.
