History of Nissan Almera

The Nissan Almera was in production from 1995 to 2006. The Almera was designed specifically for the European market; the first generation is a European export version of the Nissan Pulsar, and the second generation a version of the Bluebird Sylphy. This small family car would not win any awards in terms of style or speed but it was a popular choice for those looking for a reliable vehicle with low running costs. The Nissan Almera sold well in the UK as a car known for its reliability. Just two generations of Almera have been produced.

First generation Nissan Almera N15 (1995 - 2000)

The Nissan Almera first rolled off the production line in late 1995 as a replacement for the Nissan Sunny. The Almera was almost identical to the Japanese domestic market Pulsar. The Nissan Almera was well-equipped for the time with all models getting power steering, driver''s airbag, electric mirrors and a stereo as standard.

Two petrol engines, a 1.4l or 1.6l, were available, as was a 2-litre diesel. These were available as three- or five-door hatchbacks or a four-door saloon. The hatchbacks were most popular in Britain. A year into production, Nissan added the 2.0l petrol GTi to the range. This sporty three-door hatch came with an optional bodykit with more than a nod to the BMW M3''s design. The GTi also featured uprated suspension, front and rear strut braces and a quicker steering rack.

Almeras for the 1998 model year received a facelift with updated styling. There were now front splitters on the Si and SRi trim levels and the GTi bodykit became standard rather than optional. All models with lip spoilers now had integrated brake lights.

Second generation Nissan Almera N16 (2000 - 2006)

The second generation Nissan Almera was launched in January 2000 with an all new rounded look. Again it was a good seller for Nissan, helped by the four-star Euro NCAP safety rating and reputation for excellent reliability. The newer model had better handling than the first generation and although it was said to be lacking in rear passenger legroom, it had a bigger boot than the previous Almera.

Available as a three- or five-door hatch or four-door saloon, the second gen Almera came with a choice of petrol and diesel engines. The 1.5 litre common rail diesel came from the Renault Megane, this was the first engine to be shared within the new Nissan/Renault partnership. The Nissan Almera is known for its economical engines and Parker''s says that owners would expect reasonably priced servicing but some spares can be pricey. This is a great reason to use Breakeryard.com, as we offer parts up to 80% cheaper than main dealer prices.

The Nissan Almera facelift model was released in 2003 with updated styling and interior, new engines and retuned suspension that refined the ride and made it less bumpy when fully laden. This new model was built in Sunderland until production ended on 29th November 2006. The Almera was not replaced straight away by Nissan. Only the Qashqai could be considered the successor model until the new Nissan Pulsar family hatchback went on sale in March 2015.
