History of Peugeot 205
The Peugeot 205 was a supermini that proved to be a huge success for the French manufacturer. Produced from 1983 to 1998, the 205 was often credited as being the car that signalled a turning point in Peugeot''s life, helping to create appeal amongst a younger audience than with its previous conservative saloons. It was proudly named Car of the Decade 1990 by CAR Magazine, as well as winning What Car? Car of the Year 1983.
Peugeot slates the 205 as one of its most popular and most recognisable models ever created, with a legacy that still continues to this day. It has won a number of impressive awards, as well as being Which? magazine best buy for five consecutive years in the late 1980s.
Peugeot 205 (1983 - 1998)
Peugeot launched the 205 in February 1983, marking a change from the usual large saloons the French manufacturer had produced up until that point.
Early models of the 205 used engines from the older 104 model, which were then replaced with newer PSA designed engines. The 205 used diesel engines from the Citroen BX which had been introduced the previous year, such as the XUD PSA diesel inline-four engine. Most engines ranged from 954 cc to 1905 cc, with carburettor or fuel injected petrol and diesel versions offered. Most of the models used manual transmission. The 205 saw an early use of the now standard suspension seen across the PSA Peugeot Citroen range, including MacPherson struts to the front and torsion bar suspension to the rear.
Over the years the 1.6 L diesel engine increased in popularity, with What Car? magazine recommending it as a Used Car Buy for 1992. It was also named best buy by Which? magazine for five consecutive years, from the late 1980s. The 205 was available in a number of different trim levels, including three-door models, which were badged ''X'', and five-door model, which were badged ''G''.
The 205 was a runaway success for Peugeot, with styling that continued on to many Peugeot models that followed. During the 205''s 15-year production run the styling was never facelifted or drastically changed - a testament to its success. In 1990 some changes such as clear front indicators, single point petrol injection and catalytic converters were introduced to help comply with new pollution limits.
