History of Peugeot 206

The Peugeot 206 is a car belonging to the supermini category, which swiftly become one of Peugeot''s most popular vehicles. It was produced by the French manufacturer from 1998 to 2010. Even though the 206 finished production in most countries by 2010, in Europe it remained available as the 206+ until 2012, with front and rear styling that closely resembled the Peugeot 207. The 207 itself launched in 2006, and went on to become another top seller for Peugeot, solidifying the manufacturer''s popularity around the world. Peugeot state that the 206 still remains their best selling car of all time. In 2012 Peugeot released statistics that shows that the total production for the 206 had reached 7,962,700 units.

The Peugeot 206 was a huge bestseller for the French car manufacturer, with many people around the globe falling in love with its good looks. What Car? called the 206 one of the smartest superminis, praising its wide range of engines and trims. The 206 also came in other variants, including the very successful 206 Coupé Cabriolet.

Peugeot 206 (1998)

The 206 was launched in 1998 as a delayed replacement for the 205, which had been phased out. The 206 was originally launched as a hatchback with 1.1l, 1.4l and 1.6l petrol engines and a 1.9l diesel engine. Many people agreed that it was its cute-yet-chic exterior styling that made the 206 so popular. In 2000 it achieved a four star Euro NCAP safety rating for Adult Occupant Safety.

Peugeot 206 CC (2000)

The Peugeot 206 CC was first shown in 2000 at the Paris Motor Show, featuring a fold-away powered roof based on the Georges Paulin system first seen on the 1935 Peugeot 402 Eclipse coupe. At the time there were not many comparable CCs on the market, particularly in the same price range, leading the 206 CC to gain almost celebrity status in the car world. Many dealerships reporting them flying off the forecourt. Since production ceased in early 2008 the 206CC was replaced by the 207 CC.

Peugeot 206 SW (2001)

In 2001 Peugeot also launched the 206 SW station wagon, with What Car? awarding it 3 out of 5 stars. They described it as having more headroom than the hatchback version although many felt the interior styling let it down, with a cheap, dull feel and an uncomfortable driving position that was seen across the 206 range. Many felt that the excellent styling from the original 206 was lost when it came to the SW, leading it to be less successful than the original.

Peugeot 206 GTi 180 (2003)

This was Peugeot''s high powered offering when it came to the 206 range, with the GTi 180 introduced to the UK market. The new hot hatch used a high powered 2l engine and featured alloy wheels, bucket seats and short shift gear linkage. The 206 GTi 180 was produced alongside the RC in Europe to celebrate Peugeot''s success in the rally world.
