History of Peugeot 207

The Peugeot 207 is a car produced by the French automaker Peugeot, now part of PSA Peugeot Citroen, that falls into the supermini category. It was made from 2006 to 2012, when it was replaced by the Peugeot 208. The 207 was launched during 2006 in some European countries, and later on in other European markets as well as further afield. The 207 was praised for its value and excellent safety record, achieving a five star rating by Euro NCAP in 2006. Peugeot says that the 207 was one of its best-selling models ever.

As one of Peugeot''s best-selling models, the 207 was a popular fixture on roads around the world from its inception in 2006. It was widely praised for its value, safety and overall styling, and was named the sixth best-selling car overall in 2007, and third best-selling in the supermini sector.

Peugeot 207 (2006 - 2012)

The Peugeot 207 was launched in the UK in June 2006, during a time when unions representing workers at the PSA Peugeot Citroen factory in Ryton, Coventry were campaigning against plans to close the Ryton plant. Fortunately for Peugeot the protest was unsuccessful in its aims of creating a boycott against vehicles by the French manufacturer, and the 207 saw growing popularity in the UK market.

As the successor to the 206, the 207 was based on a version of the platform used for the Citroën C3. Production of the 207 was undertaken in France, Spain, and a newer manufacturing plant in Slovakia.

Initially the 207 was available as either a three- or five-door hatchback, although a 207 SW station wagon, a 207 coupe and a 207 CC convertible coupe were later launched. The 207 CC, launched in 2007, was destined to replaced the now ageing 206 CC hardtop model. The 207 CC, with its retractable hardtop roof, was the last model in the 207 range to go out of production in November 2014. In 2009 the 207 was given a facelift, including a new grille design that brought the 207 in line with the newly facelifted 307 model.

After its launch, the 207 was met with somewhat mixed reviews, which caused some initial concerns for Peugeot. The 207 was criticised in many motoring publications for its interior design, as well as the quality of its gearbox and the vagueness of its handling capabilities. It was, however, widely praised for its value, safety and styling, and proved to be reliable despite initial fears from reviewers. The 207 turned out to be a great seller for Peugeot, and in 2013 it was reported that total production had reached 2,504,900 units.

Engines

When the 207 was first produced, three petrol engines were available: a 1.4-litre 8v with 75 hp or a 16v 90 hp, and a 1.6-litre 16v with 110 bhp. Towards the end of 2006 the 1.4 and 1.6 16v variants were replaced with the new 1.4 vti and 1.6 vti valvetronic engines. Two turbocharged and intercooled options were also added to the engine line up. These four engines were the result of an agreement between PSA and the BMW group, and can also be found in the Mini Cooper S vehicles. Two diesel-powered engines, a 1.4l and a 1.6l HDi were also available. When the 207 was facelifted in 2009 there were some engine changes, which involved engine management software tweaks to boost the power of the GTI from 175 hp to 184 hp.
