History of Peugeot 308

With its reputation for low fuel economy and CO2 emissions paired with smart, chic styling, it''s easy to see why the Peugeot 308 has been such a success. Popular for company cars due to its low running costs, the 308 has won many awards including Best Company Car to Buy 2015 and European Car of the Year 2014.

First generation Peugeot 308 (2008 - 2013)

2008 saw Peugeot launch the new 308, designed to be a replacement for the 307 in most international markets. The 308 was loosely based on the old 307 chassis, although it featured new bodywork which was slightly longer and wider in dimensions than the previous model. Production and manufacturing was undertaken in France at the Sochaux and Mulhouse plants, as well as in Russia, China, Indonesia and Argentina.

The 308 HDi held the Guinness World Record for the most fuel-efficient mainstream car currently in production. The first gen 308 was available as a five-door hatchback, although a three-door version was also offered to limited markets. The 308 CC was unveiled in 2009, which featured a retractable hardtop designed to replace the outgoing 307 CC. In 2010 Peugeot introduced the GT in the UK, which boasted a turbocharged 1.6 litre engine.

Peugeot released a facelifted version of the 308 in 2011 following the launch at the Geneva Motor Show. The main updates were a new front end and changes to the rear.

Second generation Peugeot 308 (2014 - present)

Autumn 2013 saw the launch of the second gen 308, which featured all-new Peugeot styling previously seen on the 508 and 208. Unlike the original 308 it was built on the PSA EMP2 platform, previously used by the Citroen C4 Picasso.

This generation saw a boost in popularity for the 308, with it being named European Car of the Year in 2014, beating the popular BMW i3. This small family car was available as a three- or five-door hatchback, as well as the previous generation CC version and the five-door 308 SW estate vehicle.

The 308 is a consistently safe vehicle, achieving a five-star safety rating during Euro NCAP testing in 2007, 2009 and 2013.
