History of Renault Master

The Renault Master is a medium to large sized van produced by the French vehicle manufacturer Renault since 1980. Now in its third generation, the Master has been consistently popular for Renault, living through several different body styles from a standard van to bigger models with larger load areas, as well as long wheelbase models. The panel van variants have been the most popular models. Now in its third generation, the Renault Master has earned a reputation as a practical, strong and reliable vehicle in the van industry. Current versions make the most of modern technology and safety features to ensure a comfortable and efficient drive.

First Generation Renault Master (1980 - 1997)

The Renault Master was first launched in 1980, with a 2.5 litre Fiat-Sofim diesel engine. From 1984 a 2.1 litre power unit was also added to the line up. Distinctive styling helped the master stand out in a crowd, with a sliding door design and rounded door handles that were unusual for the time. The van was manufactured at Renault's SoVAB Batilly plant in northeastern France, which was new at the time.

A heavy duty alternative later appeared which was almost identical to the original Master. Sold by Renault Trucks as the Renault B70 to B120, it appeared in 1982 as the 70 PS (51 kW) B70 (diesel) and as the 80 PS (59 kW) B80 (petrol). It was a smaller truck with a Renault Master body and a separate chassis, featuring rear wheel-drive and rear dual wheels.

Second Generation Renault Master (1997 - 2010)

The Mk2 Master was available to buy from 1998, with a more conventional appearance than its predecessor. It was almost identical to the Vauxhall Movano and Nissan Interstar vans. The second gen Master used the Renault S-Type engine, as well as the G-Type engine and the Nissan YD engine.

In 2003 the van underwent a major facelift, with restyled headlights as well as cosmetic changes to rear lights, wing mirrors, and the dashboard. This meant that the front end more resembled the smaller Trafic van. The new Master was available in a number of sizes and configurations, and became a very popular base for converting into ambulances.

Third Generation Renault Master (2010 - Present)

May 2010 saw the introduction of the latest Renault Master van, which again included the rebadged Vauxhall and Nissan models. A 2.3-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine is shared across all manufacturers and is available in three tune varieties states; from 100 PS (74 kW; 99 bhp) to 150 PS (110 kW; 148 bhp). New safety features including Electronic Stability Control, Extended Grip and Hill Start help to improve the drive quality for owners of this latest Master.
