History of Renault Megane

Rich in history, Renault''s work dates as far back as 1899. With a name for quality, Renault has produced many cars in its time. The Megane is one of their most cherished models, popular with car drivers across the globe. Since production started in 1995 there have been three generations of the Megane, offering various body types and designs.

The three generations of Renault Megane have been popular with drivers across the globe, with Renault production facilities in Turkey, Colombia, Argentina, France, Spain, Russia, Mexico, Belgium and Indonesia for the first generation, and expanding further across Europe and beyond in more recent years. The second generation Megane was voted European Car of the Year in 2003 and became the first car in its class to receive a 5 star EuroNCAP rating.

Warranty Direct ranks the Renault Megane 19th out of a total listed 42 small family cars. This means that the Megane is 19th most reliable in its class. However, as reliable as the car as a whole is, there are often times in a cars life span in which it will begin to show signs of wear and tear. With age it becomes more likely for parts to break and become vulnerable as a whole, with their expected lifespan mostly down to how the users look after their vehicle.

First Generation Renault Megane 1995 To 2002

The first Renault Megane was launched in the autumn of 1995. This original design was basically just a reskin of its predecessor: the Renault 19. It carried over the same floorpan, engines, transmissions and chassis design. The primary focus for the first generation Megane was to display Renault''s new central emphasis on safety. To show this the Megane introduced Renault''s brand new "System for Restraint and Protection" (SRP).

The SRP is essentially a system that gives occupant restraint by interaction of the seat, seatbelt, pretensioner, load limiter and airbag. The first generation also offered various other safety features, helping it to achieve a best-in-class 4 star crash test rating in the 1998 round of testing by EuroNCAP.

Second Generation Renault Megane 2002 To 2008

Launched in September 2002, the second generation Renault Megane marked a drastically different design, bearing very little resemblance to the first generation Megane. The new design had been inspired by Renault''s new design language that was first displayed with the Renault Avantime (2001 - 2003). Voted European Car of the Year in 2003, the new Megane received a good reception in each area of production, showcasing very innovative technology.

The second generation Megane was one of the first Renault vehicles to see the introduction of new technology such as the Renault Card keyless ignition system. This came as standard, which was a first in its class. Buyers also had the option of a panoramic glass sunroof.

Third Generation Renault Megane 2008 To Present

The third generation Megane was launched in late 2008, presenting yet another completely different design. The original release of the third generation Megane saw sales for just two models: the 5 door hatchback and Coupé. They sported very different designs, with the Coupé having a sporty design whilst the 5 door model is more conservative.

Engines

The first line of production saw five body types: saloon, coupé, hatchback, convertible and estate, with engine sizes ranging from 1.4 litres to 2.0 litres. Renault also produced a limited number of sport rendition phase ones, which sported the Renaultsport bodywork.

The second generation Megane also had engines ranging in size from 1.4 litre to 2.0 litre. A flex-fuel version of the vehicle, known as the "Hi-Flex" was released in Brazil. The engine for this model is able to run either with unleaded petrol or ethanol. This flex fuel version is available with a 16V 109 horsepower 1.6 litre inline-four engine, or a 2.0 litre engine which does not allow ethanol use because its engine is made in France.

The original release of the third generation Renault Megane offered a wide range of engine sizes, like the other two generations: from 1.4 litre to 2.0 litre. Four body types are available in this generation: five door hatchback, three door coupé, two door coupé cabriolet and a five door estate. In 2012, the new Megane saw its first facelift which saw the introduction of three engines: a 1.2 litre turbocharged petrol engine, a new 110 hp version of the 1.5 litre dCi engine and a new 1.6 litre dCi engine.

Notable issues

The Renault Megane is a generally reliable vehicle, offering great value for money. Most issues found with the previous two generations have been resolved with the third generation Megane. However there weren''t and aren''t many specific faults with the Megane in general, but one common fault found amongst a number of owners is the wear of the hub bearing. Luckily, Breakeryard.com can help you find a replacement at an affordable price.
