About Top Ball Joints
The Renault top ball joint acts as a pivot between the wheels and the suspension and connects the upper control arm and the knuckle together with an upper control arm seal boot in the middle. Although there are front ball joints in vehicles, some high-performance vehicles also have rear ball joints.
The Renault top ball joint consists of a ball stud and bearing which sits inside a housing socket. Underneath the bottom side of the bearing is a rubber pressure ring. Lastly there is a grease fitting which acts as a guide for wear.
To inspect for damage of the Renault top ball joint you need to ensure that the vehicle is supported by the wheels. Ensure that the grease fitting is free of dirt and debris and then move a screwdriver or your fingernail across the cover. If the grease fitting is either flush or recessed into the cover the Renault top ball joint needs replacing.
Signs of failure include clicking, popping or snapping sounds when the wheel is turned. Failures of a ball joint are very serious and can cause the wheel’s angle to be incorrect.
Renault trivia
- Widely considered the first-ever Grand Prix, the 1906 Le Mans was won by the Renault AK90CV, driven by French driving legend Ferenc Szisz. The race consisted of 12 laps of a daunting 64-mile circuit.
- The Renault RS01 was dubbed ‘the yellow steam engine’ after it became the world’s first-ever turbocharged F1 car. It wasn’t a reliable car, but it was certainly quick!
- The fastest Renault ever made is the 1978 Alpine A443. It raced at Le Mans, and even with a less than intimidating 2.1ltr V6 engine it still managed an incredible 236mph.
- Renault also owns Automobile Daci and Renault Samsung Motors, among their other global acquisitions.
- The Renault 8 was the first production car to come with a four-wheel disc brake system, and in 1980 the company filed a patent for a ‘braking distribution device for total adherence’.
