History of SEAT Leon

The SEAT Leon is a small family hatchback built by the Spanish car manufacturer SEAT that was launched in October 1998. Now in its third generation, the Leon vehicles have shared many components, including design platforms, with Volkswagen Group cars. The Leon has been a very successful line for SEAT, winning a huge number of awards including Auto Express Hot Hatch of the Year 2014, Towcar of the Year 2015 and Scottish Estate Car of the Year 2014, among others. Since the SEAT Leon first launched in 1999 more than one million cars have been produced and sold over its three generations, cementing the Leon''s place as a popular sporty hatchback in the small car market. It has won many awards, including What Car? Best Coupe Under £25,000 award for 2014, and earned a reputation as being great value for money with strong engines and good handling.

First Generation SEAT Leon (1999 - 2005)

The Mk1 SEAT Leon was first launched in 1990, available in a hatchback form only. It was based on the Volkswagen Group A4 platform and shared many components with other VW models including the Volkswagen Golf Mk4 and the Audi A3.

The Leon was the first C-segment SEAT model to be built as part of the VW Group. It was intended to be a sportier, cheaper version of the ever popular Golf, which led to its slightly aggressive, youthful styling. In the initial line up the engines available were a 1.4-litre 16 valve petrol engine, a 1.6-litre 8 valve petrol engine, and two versions of the Volkswagen Group''s 20 valve turbocharged 1.8-litre powerplant.

Second Generation SEAT Leon (2005 - 2012)

2005 saw the release of the second gen Leon vehicle, with production commencing in May 2005. This version was based on the Volkswagen Group A5 platform, which was also used by the Mk5 VW Golf. Once again built in Spain, the exterior took on a sharper look with integrated external door handles and a similar style to existing Alfa Romeo models. Walter de''Silva was responsible for the design, utilising a similar aesthetic to the SEAT Altea.

The base model for this SEAT featured a new 16 valve 1.2litre TSI petrol engine, while sportier models received either a 2.0-litre FSI or a 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine, which proved very popular.

This generation also saw the introduction of the first sporty Leon model in 2006, named the Leon FR. It had twin-exhaust pipes, sporty seats and a branded FR gear stick, as well as a 2.0 TFSI engine from the VW Golf Mk5 GTI, or a variation on the 2.0 TDI unit featured in both the Golf and the Audi A3. The 2.0-litre TFSI Cupra model was also introduced, which boasted a 177 kilowatts (241 PS; 237 bhp) engine and could hit 0-100 kph (62.1 mph) in just 6.4 seconds.

This Mk2 Leon won a number of awards, including Diesel Car of the Year 2006 in Scotland and Car of the Year 2006 in Denmark.

Third Generation SEAT Leon (2012 - Present)

Based on VW''s latest MQB platform, the latest generation of SEAT Leon is shorter and lighter than its predecessor yet it boasts an extended wheelbase to increase room in the cabin. This also boosts the amount of shoulder and legroom, as well as giving 380 litres of boot space.

The Mk3 Leon also has new safety features to suit the times, including driver''s knee airbag, a multi-collision braking system, a lane-keeping assistant, and driver fatigue detection. Another new feature is optional full-LED headlamps combined with a full beam assistant, available for the first time in its class.

In 2012 the latest SEAT Leon was tested under the Euro NCAP assessment scheme for its safety performance, and proudly achieved a five-star rating. 2012 also saw SEAT announce the introduction of a three-door version and an estate model to complement the five-door Leon for the first time. The Leon ST estate model was launched at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, and went on to win a number of awards.
