About Power Steering Racks

Virtually every motor vehicle that is manufactured nowadays has some form of power assisted steering system to make manoeuvring easier for the driver. The vast majority of power assisted steering systems operate using hydraulic pressure and utilise either a power steering box or a rack and pinion system.

An essential component in the operation of the hydraulic rack and pinion power steering system is the Skodapower steering rack. The Skodapower steering rack is made up of a rack, which is enclosed with a steering pinion. The Skodapower steering rack connects to the vehicle’s steering wheel. When the driver turns the steering wheel, the pinion moves and forces the steering rack to move either to the right or the left. The ends of the Skodapower steering rack are attached to the vehicle’s front wheels so the steering rack inputs and causes them to turn.

A Skodapower steering rack employs a pump, driven by the vehicle’s engine to supply hydraulic fluid, under pressure, to the steering rack when the wheel is turned. This makes the process of turning of the steering rack far easier.

If the Skodapower steering rack becomes worn it is prone to develop a leak. This will make steering difficult and marks the right to time to exchange the part for a new or re-conditioned alternative.

Skoda trivia

  • The Skoda company was formed when one of the founders, Václav Laurin, got some bad customer service from a bicycle repair business.
  • In 2004, 1.8 million Skoda cars were registered in the Czech Republic. There are only 3.7 million cars in total that have been registered there, which means that almost half of all the cars available in the Czech Republic are Skodas. Every Skoda sold there is matched by a planted tree.
  • The 2018 Skoda Kodiaq RS is a seven-seater that set a new speed record in the car that has yet to be beaten (the car was driven by Top Gear presenter Sabine Schmitz).
  • The Skoda Kodiaq has some surprising features, many of which have been seen on later Skoda models. Some of the more 'out there' accessories include the ice scraper that is stored in the fuel cap and the umbrella that has its own dedicated space in the driver's door.
  • The team that designed the Lamborghini Miura and the Countach also designed the Skoda Favorit.
