History of Suzuki Swift

The Suzuki Swift is a supermini that has been in production in Japan since 2000, although in Europe it carried the Suzuki Ignis badge until 2004. The Swift has won multiple accolades including best buy hot hatchback by What Car? magazine for the Swift Sport in 2012. According to Warranty Direct, the Suzuki Swift is the 37th most reliable supermini out of a listed 50 cars.The Suzuki Swift is one of, if not the most popular Suzuki car model. Offering excellent value for money and a great driving performance the Swift is popular amongst drivers across the globe. It has won more than 60 awards in its lifetime, including Japanese Car of the Year in 2006. It was also awarded Small Car of the Year by BBC Top Gear in 2011.

First Generation Suzuki Swift 2000 To 2004

The first generation Suzuki Swift was introduced in the year 2000 as a replacement for the Suzuki Cultus. Outside of the Japanese market the vehicle was known as the Suzuki Ignis, offered as either a three or five door hatchback. The shorter three door body formed the basis of the Ignis Sport model, which was introduced in 2003. The Ignis Sport featured redesigned bumpers and was fitted with a higher output version of the 1.5 litre engine.

Second Generation Suzuki Swift 2004 To 2010

Debuting at the Paris Motor Show, the second generation Suzuki Swift first hit the market in 2004. The design and driving characteristics focused heavily on the European market, where the Swift badge was adopted. The Swift was very well received globally, receiving four stars out of five in the Euro NCAP crash tests. It was also awarded 2006 Semperit Irish Car of the Year in Ireland.

This generation of Suzuki Swift was available in a four door saloon body type as well as the standard three and five door hatchback versions.

Third Generation Suzuki Swift 2010 To Present

The third generation Suzuki Swift offered a more rounded design, with an extended wheelbase of 50 millimeters. Production for the Swift is now carried out in Japan, Hungary, India, Thailand and Malaysia, where Suzuki manufactures three and five door hatchback versions of the Swift, as well as a four door saloon. They also designed a Swift S-Concept model in 2011.

Engines

The first generation Suzuki Swift is available with 1.3l petrol and diesel engines, or a 1.5l petrol engine, each offering five-speed manual transmission or optional four-speed automatic. The second generation Swift offered a wider range of engines, from 1.2l to 1.6l, available in both petrol and diesel variants. The engine offered with the latest Suzuki Swift is a heavily revised version of the K12 engine. In most countries, the third generation Swift uses a 1.4l VVT petrol engine, producing 95 horsepower. The 2011 Swift S-Concept is powered by a 1.6l 4 cylinder engine, combined with a six speed manual transmission.
