History of Suzuki Vitara

The original Suzuki Vitara was first seen on British shores in 1998 and quickly became seen as a fashion accessory. The Vitara was ahead of its time as the first SUV crossover, and was much more an on-road car rather than a tough off-roader. It was a popular car with little changing between the late 1980s and 2000 when the Suzuki Vitara was phased out. Nearly three million have been produced worldwide. The Suzuki Vitara is popular small 4x4 that was first launched in 1988. It was phased out in 2000, replaced by the Grand Vitara. Now it''s back, and Suzuki is expecting the all new Vitara to be as popular as ever.

Suzuki Vitara (1988 - 2000)

The original Vitara was first sold in the UK in 1988 as a three-door 4x4. The four-wheel drive was switchable, so the Vitara had front-wheel drive on the road with a separate gearbox for when four-wheel drive was selected. The three-door model isn''t particularly practical as it has limited boot space and it''s difficult to get into rear seats. The five-door is more practical and can seat children in the back comfortably, making it suitable as a family car. It was relatively cheap to run and insure but parts can be expensive; the servicing period is 6,000 miles. Low cost parts can be sourced from Breakeryard.com to save you money.

When the Vitara was first available back in 1988 the only engine available was a 1.6 8v that could reach 0-60 in a lethargic 16 seconds. When the five-door was launched in 1991 it came with the 16v 1.6, which cut down the 0-60 by 2.5 seconds. This engine wasn''t available in the three-door or the soft-top for another three years. In 1995, the 2.0 V6 with 134 bhp arrived and a Mazda-powered turbo diesel went on sale in January 1996.

The early models didn''t have a lot of mod cons. Power steering wasn''t included to begin with, but they did have electric mirrors. The Power Pack SE models also had central locking, electric windows, and styling add ons including two-tone metallic paintwork, chrome mirrors and wheel arch mouldings. The ''88 to ''00 Vitara doesn''t have a Euro NCAP crash test rating. Driver and passenger airbags were added in the late 1990s, as was an immobiliser. The Vitara was gradually phased out from 1998 to 2000.

Suzuki Vitara (2015 - Present)

Suzuki launched the new Vitara in early 2015. It''s gone from being a lone ranger to a crossover in a competitive market, going head-to-head with the Peugeot 2008 and Renault Captur. There are only two engines available, a petrol and a diesel. Both are 1.6 litres in capacity and can produce 118 bhp. The difference is in the torque; the petrol puts out 156 Nm but the diesel has more than double the grunt, displacing 320 Nm.

The petrol Suzuki Vitara comes with a five-speed manual gearbox, with a six-speed auto transmission as an option. The diesel, however, is only available with a six-speed manual box. Both are very frugal; the front-wheel drive petrol can return 53.3 mpg and the diesel 70.6 mpg. If you''ve opted for the 4x4 or auto the economy does suffer. The Vitara is known for its 4x4 heritage, so it fits that Suzuki''s Allgrip four-wheel drive system is available on all models of the new Vitara. It''s a clever system with the 4x4 kicking in on demand, sending power to the rear wheels when it detects or anticipates slip from the front.

The new Suzuki Vitara is available with three trim levels, all of which are well-equipped, as well as a range of personalisation options.
