History of Toyota Auris

The Toyota Auris is a compact hatchback produced by Japanese car manufacturer Toyota. Based on the Toyota Corolla, the Auris was first introduced in 2006 and is now in its second generation. In Europe it as positioned as a replacement for the marque''s Corolla hatchback. The name came from the Latin word ''aurum'', which means gold. The Toyota Auris, now in its second generation, provided a well priced affordable option for those looking to buy into the compact hatchback market. The successful hybrid model is a popular option for company cars due to its cheap running costs and ultra-low CO2 emissions.

First Generation Toyota Auris (2006 - 2012)

The Toyota Auris was first seen as a space concept, unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 2006. Toyota then released the Auris for the UK market in 2007, aiming to replace the Corolla hatchback. It was with the Corolla that the first gen Auris shared a platform, called the E150 platform.

The Auris was designed to appeal to the lower-medium car segment, competing with the VW Golf, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra. In the UK trim levels were T2, T3 and T Spirit, with a T180 model introduced in 2007.

2007 saw Toyota invest in its Deeside engine factory to build a petrol engine for the Auris. The plant was responsible for 1.33 L Dual VVT-i engines and other power options previously built in Japan. The Auris received a five-star cabin protection rating from Euro NCAP for safety.

In 2009 Toyota launched the Auris HSD Full Hybrid Concept vehicle at the Frankfurt Motor Show, with production beginning in the following year. The hybrid model came equipped with engines produced at the marque''s Deeside plant and at the Burnaston plant, making it the first mass-produced hybrid car built in Europe.

The powertrain and battery system used within the Auris Hybrid was the same as that used on the Toyota Prius. In 2010 the Auris Hybrid was named Green Car of the Year by What Car? magazine.

Second Generation Toyota Auris (2012 - Present)

The Mk2 Toyota Auris launched in 2012 at the Paris Motor Show, with the platform and wheelbase formation carried over from its predecessor. However, according to many reviewers, the similarities between the two Auris models ended there.

The Auris MkII was released for sale in Europe in 2013, and featured a wider, lower stance with more of a luxurious slant. This was seen as a change within the Japanese manufacturer''s design aesthetics, moving away from the average styling of its mass-market vehicles to a sharper, more dynamic look. The Mk2 Auris was also designed to provide a more fun, engaging drive.

This second gen model was praised for its deceivingly spacious interior within its compact overall size, making it a winning choice for urban areas. Even the boot space was competitive within similar models.

With regards to engines, they started with an entry-level 1.33 L petrol, with extremely low running costs, as well as other options like a 1.6 L petrol and a mechanically updated 1.4 L turbodiesel that produces 89bhp and returns CO2 emissions of 99g/km.

With the second generation Auris Hybrid Toyota announced that its popularity had grown; now accounting for around one third of all Auris sales. The Mk2 Auris Hybrid has a relocated battery pack, improving overall boot space compared to the Mk1. This was achieved by modifying the carry-over platform from the first model, creating a more athletic-feeling car on the road. However, many felt that this version of the hybrid didn''t ride as well on the road as its conventional petrol-engined relatives.
