About Crankshaft Pulleys

The crankshaft, with the help of the crankshaft pulley, has an important role to play in the distribution of power in a vehicle and is fundamentally responsible for driving the car’s wheels. The engine is the power machine of a car, literally converting energy, in the form of fuel, into movement, and is known as an internal combustion engine. The engine is made up of several components that all work together to enable combustion to occur and in turn the car to move. The Toyota crankshaft pulley has an important part to play in the mechanical linkage which works to harness and distribute the power produced in the engine and transform it into the rotary drive required to make the vehicle move. The Toyota crankshaft pulley enables the drive belt to smoothly spin around, driven by the crankshaft, allowing the drive belt to propel or drive various components in the engine compartment, such as the water pump and air conditioning compressor.

The crankshaft pulley's job is to turn the belt/s that connect to and operate various components in the engine. Situated at the foot of the engine directly in front of the crankshaft, secured to the engine by bolts, the crankshaft pulley is essentially a wheel which has outer grooves that engage with the crankshaft, while linking to other components via a system of belts. The crankshaft is connected to the pistons by the connecting rods. The movement of the pistons makes the crankshaft turn. The connecting rods provide drive from the pistons to the crankshaft, where this power is changed into rotational force and distributed via the pulley and drive belt system to the various components that work together to make the wheels of the car move.

The crankshaft uses the crankshaft pulley system to distribute the power it receives from the pistons, to the components driven by the drive belt. This pulley system enables the distribution of power from the crankshaft to components such as the alternator and power steering pump, while ensuring these components are functioning in sync and kept in alignment with the rotation of the crankshaft. The crankshaft pulley helps to prolong the life of the crankshaft by absorbing some of the vibration, noise and friction produced in the process of internal combustion.

A worn, rusted, dented or damaged crankshaft pulley can affect the vital timing system of the engine and lead to damage to other crucial components. Signs of a problem can be a rattling or knocking noise from the engine and excessive vibration. When this part fails, replacing it with a Toyota crankshaft pulley will guarantee a part that's completely compatible with the make and model of your vehicle.

Toyota trivia

  • The Toyota company got its start making automated looms in 1033. Founder Sakichi Toyoda even invented the automated loom and then sold them off to try and get into the car industry. There is still an arm of Toyota that is still in the textile industry!
  • Toyota has thousands and thousands of patents, and in 2019 it gave away an incredible 23,740 patents that had been awarded over more than 20 years. Those patents were all focused on electric vehicle technology.
  • As well as the best selling car of all time, Toyota is also responsible for the longest-running production on a car model ever. The Toyota model Land Cruiser started production in 1951, and as of 2019 has sold over 10 million units!
  • Although Toyota started making its first cars in 1937, these were specifically produced to contribute to Japan's war effort. It wasn't until 1947 that they started producing cars for civilians.
  • They might be one of the biggest and well-known brand names in the world, but Toyota is still very much a family business. Every CEO so far has been a descendant of the original founder.
