About Crankshaft Sensors

The Toyota crankshaft sensor is an important and clever electronic sensor which, along with the camshaft sensor, works in conjunction with the car's ECU, playing a crucial part in enabling the engine to run on time and smoothly.

The crankshaft sensor measures the speed that the crankshaft is rotating and sends this information to the ECU which uses it to determine and control the ignition and fuel injection timing of the engine, transmission changing and variable valve timing.

The crankshaft sensor is located underneath the bonnet at the front of the engine, usually on the crankshaft, the main crank pulley, the flywheel, or the camshaft. The crankshaft sensor is commonly replaced due to damage received in an accident or general wear and tear. Extremes of heat can cause the Toyota crankshaft sensor to burn out and damage from oil leaking into the sensor is also a factor that can lead to the sensor malfunctioning. If there is a problem with the crankshaft sensor the Check Engine light will illuminate on the dashboard.

If the engine is struggling with power; spluttering and stalling; having difficulty idling; or having issues with acceleration, it could be a broken crankshaft sensor. Often an initial indication that the crankshaft sensor has failed is an engine that won't start when it is hot but will start immediately when cold.  If the crankshaft sensor is not working properly and this is ignored, it could lead to fatal engine failure. There are many problems that can arise with your car's cooling system so it is advisable to consult with your mechanic to establish the exact cause of the fault. When this vital part fails, replacing it with the Toyota crankshaft sensor will guarantee complete compatibility with the make and model of your vehicle.

Toyota trivia

  • Although Toyota started making its first cars in 1937, these were specifically produced to contribute to Japan's war effort. It wasn't until 1947 that they started producing cars for civilians.
  • As well as their other records, Toyota is known to consistently break sales records as well. It's not just the Corolla either. They have been so successful some years that they outsold Honda and Nissan combined!
  • The founder's son, Kiichiro Toyoda, did a trip around the US to get inspiration for car designs. That's why those early Toyota cars look more than a little bit like Chevrolets and Dodge Power Wagons.
  • The Toyota Prius is just the latest example of why Toyota is widely considered the greenest company in the car industry. Consistent efforts at improving sustainability and eco-awareness led to them getting voted the number one Global Green Brand back in 2015.
  • The Toyota company got its start making automated looms in 1033. Founder Sakichi Toyoda even invented the automated loom and then sold them off to try and get into the car industry. There is still an arm of Toyota that is still in the textile industry!
