History of Toyota Hilux

The Toyota Hilux is a pickup truck that has been in production since 1968. To date there have been a total of seven generations, with talks of an eighth. Over its many years the Toyota Hilux has gained a reputation for exceptional sturdiness and reliability. It has won a number of awards, taking top honours in the pick-up category at Total''s 4x4 Awards in 2013. The Toyota Hilux is known for offering great value for money, giving owners an excellent payload allowance. It has gained popularity over the years as it''s perfect for business owners looking for practical, robust transport that is more stylish than a typical van.

Early Generations Of The Toyota Hilux (1968 To 1983)

The first generation Toyota Hilux started production in 1968, offering buyers a short wheelbase form with a 1.5 litre engine that produced 77 PS. The long wheelbase version was added to the range in 1969. Engines for the Mk1 ranged between 1.5 litres and 2.0 litres, available in both petrol and diesel. Production ceased in 1972, before the Mk2 was released later that year.

The interior was upgraded, offering more safety features and more comfortable seating. The Hilux was dramatically redesigned again in 1975 to be larger and with increased standard equipment. Buyers had the choice of a 1.6 litre, 2.0 litre and 2.2 litre engine. Production for this generation of Hilux stopped in 1978, and the Mk3 was then introduced later that year, offering a wider selection of engines from 1.6 litres to 2.2 litres. The third generation of Hilux was in production until 1983.

Fourth, Fifth And Sixth Generation Toyota Hilux (1984 To 2005)

The fourth generation Hilux introduced the Xtracab extended cab option, which gave six inches of space behind the seat for in cab storage. Engines for the Mk4 ranged between 1.6 litres and 3.0 litres. Production ceased in 1988, before the Mk5 was launched later that year. Toyota decided to offer a longer wheelbase option with this generation of Hilux.

The vehicle received a facelift in 1991, which was a minor grille change and the new emblem which had recently been adopted. Production for the fifth generation Hilux stopped in 1997. The Mk6 was then introduced that same year, offering buyers a wide range of engines including a powerful 3.4 litre V6 engine. Production stopped in 2005.

Seventh Generation Toyota Hilux (2005 To Present)

The seventh generation Toyota Hilux was unveiled in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2006. The market launch was later that year, giving buyers a model that had been increased in size, classing it now as a mid-size pickup. Its design was very similar to the 4Runner. This generation saw the introduction of a very powerful 4.0 litre petrol engine. A range of diesel engines were also offered, including a 3.9 litre intercooled VNT diesel.
