History of Toyota Prius

Toyota first launched the Prius in Japan in 1997, before introducing it worldwide in 2000. When the Prius was released it was the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle on the market, which is now sold in around 80 countries and regions; with a large percentage of those in the USA and Japan. This full hybrid electric mid-size hatchback is also popular in the UK, with 20% of all Priuses sold in Europe coming from the UK. By 2008 global cumulative sales of the Prius hit the 1 million mark, with the 2 million mark reached in 2010 and the 3 million mark in 2013. The Toyota Prius was a hugely successful vehicle for the Japanese manufacturer, winning a number of accolades including 2015 Best Overall Value of the Year by Intellichoice, a Next Green Car Award 2012 and Car of the Year in Japan.

First Generation Toyota Prius (1997 - 2003)

Toyota first unveiled a hybrid concept car at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show, before the first model Prius went on sale in 1997 for the Japanese market only. The Prius was first available in the UK from 2000. When it launched, the Prius was the first mass-produced gasoline-electric hybrid car in the world.

The styling of the Prius originated from California, from a team of designers who were chosen over other competing Toyota design studios to come up with the final look for the Prius. It was designed to be a four-door saloon which made use of Toyota''s 1.5 L gasoline hybrid engine, known as the 1NZ-FXE l4. Many reviewers praised the Prius'' quirky looks as one its stand out features.

Second Generation Toyota Prius (2003 - 2009)

At the 2003 New York International Auto Show Toyota unveiled the second gen Prius. This version had been completely redesigned and was supposed to be even more environmentally-friendly than its predecessor. It was 6in longer than the Mk1 Prius and featured a new aerodynamic Kammback body to create a perfect balance between length and wind resistance.

This model was produced in Japan, at the Tsutsumi plant in Toyota, Aichi, and the Fujimatsu plant in Kariya, Aichi. It made use of a new all-electric A/C compressor for cooling, paired with a smaller NiMH battery, which was also lighter overall than on the previous model. These were just some of the factors that made the lastest version both more powerful and more efficient.

Third Generation Toyota Prius (2009 - Present)

The latest generation Prius debuted at the North American International Auto show in 2009, with sales beginning the same year. That year the Prius also won Car of the Year in Japan for the second time.

The Mk3 Prius was designed to be even more aerodynamic, with a new 1.8 L engine that boasts larger displacement for higher torque, lowering RPM and improving fuel economy at higher speeds. The electric water pump used on the Prius made it the first consumer automotive production engine that doesn''t require an accessory belt, also helping to improve fuel economy.

Toyota made use of some excellent new materials for the Mk3 Prius, including a range of plant-based ecological bioplastics which are made from wood or grass cellulose rather than petroleum. Unfortunately for Toyota the hybrid market has become more and more competitive in recent years, with lower priced hybrids like the Honda Insight making it tougher for Toyota to stay ahead.

The third gen Prius has also seen some issues. In 2014 Toyota UK announced a recall of the Prius, due to a software error which could cause the car to stop suddenly. However, safety was still a priority for Toyota, with them scoring a five star rating during Euro NCAP testing.
