About Propshafts

The Toyota propshaft is a key part of an automatic vehicle’s transmission and is attached to the gearbox using a propshaft coupling. This coupling is usually a two-piece rubber doughnut shaped gaiter with metal bushings inside that connects the propshaft. The Toyota propshaft can be attached to the gearbox using a variety of different fixings such as nuts and bolts or cap screws. The ends of the Toyota propshaft can either be parallel or tapered - this will influence which fixing is used.

Toyota propshaft failures can happen for a variety of reasons but most common is general wear to the propshaft coupling especially in rubber couplings. If the propshaft coupling becomes damaged it will cause excess play in the Toyota propshaft. This play can twist the pipe.

Other causes for damage to the Toyota propshaft could be road hazards denting the tube of the Toyota propshaft. It’s also possible for the Toyota propshaft to shear in half if it has been rubbing against another part of the vehicle possibly through incorrect installation of the Toyota propshaft or nearby parts.

Toyota trivia

  • Although Toyota started making its first cars in 1937, these were specifically produced to contribute to Japan's war effort. It wasn't until 1947 that they started producing cars for civilians.
  • As well as their other records, Toyota is known to consistently break sales records as well. It's not just the Corolla either. They have been so successful some years that they outsold Honda and Nissan combined!
  • The founder's son, Kiichiro Toyoda, did a trip around the US to get inspiration for car designs. That's why those early Toyota cars look more than a little bit like Chevrolets and Dodge Power Wagons.
  • The Toyota Prius is just the latest example of why Toyota is widely considered the greenest company in the car industry. Consistent efforts at improving sustainability and eco-awareness led to them getting voted the number one Global Green Brand back in 2015.
  • As well as the best selling car of all time, Toyota is also responsible for the longest-running production on a car model ever. The Toyota model Land Cruiser started production in 1951, and as of 2019 has sold over 10 million units!
