About Rev Counters

A motor vehicle’s Toyotarev counter, or tachometer, is an invaluable component that assists a driver to protect the vehicle’s engine from the damage that can be caused by excessive work.

A Toyotarev counter is one of the instruments that commonly appears on the dashboard panel and can either be displayed as either an analogue design or in digital form. The Toyotarev counter works by displaying the optimum time to change gear before over revving. This enhances the peak engine power and torque.

In more modern vehicles the driver receives additional assistance from the Toyotarev counter. These more sophisticated versions have warning lights to indicate when it is the best time, in terms of the number of revolutions per minute reached, to change gear.

In addition to protecting the engine mechanism, the Toyotarev counter has three important features. Firstly, because it prevents the driver from working the engine too hard it optimises fuel and oil consumption. Secondly, the reduction in fuel and oil consumption saves money on running costs. Finally, because the engine is running at its optimum performance level, exhaust emissions can be reduced.

As part of the armoury of appliances in a modern motor vehicle, the Toyotarev counter is one of the most effective in aiding the driver to make the most out of an engine’s performance.

Toyota trivia

  • World-famous magazine the MIT Technology Review repeatedly includes Toyota in its list of the world's 50 smartest companies.
  • The company is proud of the fact (and very vocal about it, rightly) that it spends $1million EVERY HOUR on research and development.
  • Without the US, Toyota very likely wouldn't exist today as we know it. In 1950, the car company was struggling to fight off bankruptcy and only managed to make 300 trucks until the Korean War kicked off. The US then put in an order for 5,000 vehicles, transforming the company and its future.
  • That founder's name was Toyoda, but the name of the company was changed to Toyota because it took one less stroke to write in Japanese. Eight is a lucky number in Japan, and Toyota takes eight strokes to write, and so Toyota it is!
  • As well as their other records, Toyota is known to consistently break sales records as well. It's not just the Corolla either. They have been so successful some years that they outsold Honda and Nissan combined!
