About Speedometers

A vehicle’s Toyota speedometer is a gauge or meter that measures the speed of a motor vehicle. Is does this by measuring the speed at which the wheels are rotating and communicating this to the Toyota speedometer head, which then displays this as the vehicle’s speed.

There are two principal means by which the Toyota speedometer system communicates the necessary information to the Toyota speedometer head. The first of these is by way of a speedometer cable. This is a lengthy, flexible cable that comprises a collection of wires connected to the drive shaft, which turns as the wheels do. The rotation of the drive shaft causes the cable to turn which causes a magnet within a cup inside the speedometer head to turn. This causes currents that produce motion which, in turn, causes the Toyota speedometer dial to move and demonstrate the vehicle’s speed.

The second means of transmitting information to the Toyota speedometer head is electronically, by means of a Toyota speedometer transducer. The Toyota speedometer transducer is normally attached to the vehicle’s transmission and is an electronic pulse generator. It sends signals to the car’s computer as to how quickly the wheels are turning and this information is translated by the computer into the speed that is displayed by the Toyota speedometer.

In either type of Toyota speedometer system there are various components that are susceptible to failure but, fortunately, all of these are easily replaced.

Toyota trivia

  • World-famous magazine the MIT Technology Review repeatedly includes Toyota in its list of the world's 50 smartest companies.
  • It's not exactly a secret, but surprisingly few people are aware that Toyota also makes a couple of other brand-name cars. That's because they own or partially own Lexus, Subaru, and Scion.
  • Without the US, Toyota very likely wouldn't exist today as we know it. In 1950, the car company was struggling to fight off bankruptcy and only managed to make 300 trucks until the Korean War kicked off. The US then put in an order for 5,000 vehicles, transforming the company and its future.
  • That founder's name was Toyoda, but the name of the company was changed to Toyota because it took one less stroke to write in Japanese. Eight is a lucky number in Japan, and Toyota takes eight strokes to write, and so Toyota it is!
  • Incredibly, there are more Toyota made cars on the world's roads than any other vehicle. It's not just high sales figures that make that viable either. Their durability means that even Toyotas that were sold 20 years ago are still on the road!
